Our first 500, a 1.2 POP, I took the car in to a Fiat dealership for a 'free' diagnostic check which had been sent out by post. They announced to me after the 'free' check, that the electric steering motor was faulty, diagnostics had told them so. I told them then that they could fix it, under warranty, which they did.
Never had anything like that to do with steering on any other car I've ever owned. What's more, the steering wasn't giving us any problems, or we certainly never noticed anything prior to me taking it into the dealership. If I'd have had to pay for the work to be done out of my own pocket, the dealership told me that it would have cost over £1k to sort out myself. The replacement had to be authorised by a Fiat insurance assessor and the work was approved.
