Some of you might have seen my recent problems and needing a new radiator and gearbox.

Arrived back home from the garage yesterday and I got a check engine message with stop/start unavailable. Took it back today, told problem was fixed and when I was about to leave the same message came on. Mechanic took the error code and the bank 2 O2 sensor (not quite sure of the exact description) needs replacing.

Getting new one fitted tomorrow minus labour charge. I'm a bit unsure as I didn't have any problems before I had a new gearbox fitted but it could be a coincidence.

Is this known for failing? Car is 2010 model.

I doubt it.

O2 sensors are relatively fragile and my guess is they knocked it when removing/refitting the gearbox. (n)

If you do have to pay for a new one, make sure they don't overcharge you. This will give you an idea of the cost.

They are charging me around that figure. I am going to say something to them tomorrow. Never had a check engine message before it went in.

Plus would this make the car dull to drive? If not, I think my clutch is also going. :(

A duff O2 sensor will cause the car to read from default 'safe' ECU maps and that will limit performance. A slipping clutch feels quite different (engine revs with no increase in road speed), if the engine or gearbox came out on one of my cars, I'd typically replace the clutch at that time.

My car last night just randomly revved like I had my foot on the clutch which I didn't. This was when I was cruising in 5th gear.

The garage specialises in transmissions so will get their opinion AFTER the O2 sensor has been fitted. They've not even mentioned about my clutch and they've test driven my car 3 times now.

If the clutch is slipping after a gearbox change, then most likely the job hasn't been done properly. Getting oil/grease on the clutch & then replacing it is one easy way of achieving this result.

I'd also agree with UFI that it's good practice to change the clutch friction plate whenever you've got the 'box off. If this wasn't offered to you, then that alone would ring a warning bell in my head.

Just being a transmission specialist doesn't necessarily mean they're any good.

Do not be fobbed off if they try to tell you that it will sort itself out if you just drive it; once the clutch starts to slip, it will likely not be long before it fails completely.

Went out in the car with a mechanic driving and I asked if he thought the clutch was fine, he asked me why so I explained the revving for no reason. He drove it with more enthusiasm and said yes the clutch is slipping badly.

Back at the workshop he said it's his fault for not noticing and he will replace the clutch and just charge me for the part. No labour charge because he could see how fed up I was (some tears but I am a girl).

I hope that is it after this.

Sounds like a fair result. Hope you get some problem free miles for a while now.

Got even more of a result, mechanic thought about it last night and is now not charging me a penny. Really nice of him and much appreciated after what I've been through with my car.

Old clutch was ok but friction pads (I don't know technical term) was covered in grease?! How on earth could that happen?

Handling the parts which need to be kept clean with greasy hands whilst removing/refitting :nono:. Remember what I said in post #6?

It could also be oil that had weeped past a failing seal in the old 'box, but the mechanic would have to be both blind and stupid not to notice that.

I do hope they replaced the friction plate instead of just trying to degrease it.

If the latter, it likely won't be long before it starts to slip again...

Unfortunately, unless they've replaced everything, including the main spring, it likely won't last very long anyway. Running the car for any length of time with a slipping clutch generally means the clutch overheats, which often ruins all of its working parts.

I've not said yet but I noticed the old clutch "slipping" as the old gearbox started making noises. It must have leaked.

I'm still weary of the original garage I took car to last month for its MOT and full service. Car was absolutely fine beforehand. I rung and had a go at the mechanic for putting a bolt(!) to plug the radiator drain. "You should have brought it back to me" was the response in a dreary voice. I think he tampered with my car to be honest.

Noticed that garage didn't look busy at all lately. Trying to make jobs? He was also quoting £300 just to take the gearbox out! Where it's been done it was £150! See what I mean?

Is bad though that the 2nd mechanic didn't notice the clutch.

They've replaced the entire clutch. Why would they do both for me to go back with similar problems? My boss knows the owner (something else I've not said but not been needed to be said) and they know that, why would they cut corners?
