I did do a search and still not 100% sure so think it is best to ask.
Got a 63 reg 500 twinair sport, looking in the hand book it says use selenia k p.e. looking on line it looks like the oil is 5 w40 fully synthetic oil. can anyone confirm its 5 w40 and what brands meet the selenia kpe.

I have same problem! Have a one week old (very lovely) 500s with the twin air engine. Checked the oil on Friday and it was between the min and max mark after 400 miles.
Looked up on line and got the indy car spares shop to check and bought the expensive Castrol EDGE 5W40 ACEA C3 1 litre at £17. Topped up to the max mark..... All happy until I looked in the manual, where it states 0.9 TwinAir 65HP 85HP and 105HP SAE 0W30 ACEA C2 Fiat 9.55535-GS1 only.

Seriously confused and have I now topped up with the wrong oil??

Actually, there's nothing wrong with the oil being between the min/max mark.

Also, I'm looking in my own twinair owners manual now and it states word for word:

SAE 5W-40 ACEA C3 grade synthetic base lubricants. Fiat Classification 9.55535-S2.
For 0.9 TwinAir 85 HP versions, using lubricants with specifications lower than ACEA C3 and with grade SAE 5W40 could cause engine damage not covered under warranty.

I can't see anything in my own manual that reflects what you've posted.

If you have a smart phone, you can even download the official Ciao Fiat App for free. That too in the Technical Specs section of the owners handbook states ACEA C3 5W40.

Castrol Edge can be bought much cheaper (if you discover this is the correct oil) - somebody found some at Asda for £30 recently, although I don't know if the offer still stands. Costco regularly have it in voucher offer too if you have a card. Otherwise it will cost you a fortune until the engine 'beds in' at £17 per litre.

I treat oil level the same as fuel level - anywhere between minimum and maximum is fine, it doesn't have to be at maximum. Just check regularly to ensure it doesn't drop below minimum (both oil and fuel).

To be honest with you I feel my engine runs better when oil is at max. I also remember reading my Audi manual which had said for demanding driving make sure oil is at max level if not just a but higher than max.

Your manual says 0w-30? You sure? I am going to be honest with you, I really doubt there is much of a difference between 0w-30, 5w-30, and 5w-40. You can use all three and the engine will just be fine.

Costco have the new formulation Edge 5W40 FST in stock right now at a shade under £30 for 4 litres, which is less than half the price the OP had to pay. On voucher days, it's about £5-£6 less than that :).

Economy motoring is about buying good products at a keen price, not about chucking in something cheap which just about manages to meet the dictionary definition of 'oil'.

I had a look at that APP, it doesent seem to differentiate between the engine types - same oil as above for all?

Again, why spend £30 when this costs £20.39 delivered and meets all the specs:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Petronas-...s&hash=item4605c214f2&clk_rvr_id=575439293751

Personally, for the same reason I buy Shell fuel not supermarket even though of course it meets required specification. Or even why you would find Heinz beans in my kitchen cupboard not own-brand.

I use and have used Castrol oils in various cars for years, so I am happy with the brand I know, even though Petronas make the Fiat oil I beleive so of course it is okay. Some would call me a fool, but each to their own, whatever makes you happy.

I've only ever had Ford and Fiat cars too. I really am stuck in my ways.

Yes, interesting this. Despite all the threads which indicate that ACEA C3 5w40 oil is the correct grade oil for the TwinAir and the 1.2 etc, it would seem there are 'two versions' of the owners manual floating about, one stating 0.9 TwinAir 65HP 85HP and 105HP SAE 0W30 ACEA C2 Fiat 9.55535-GS1 only, and the other 5w40 ACEA C3, classification 9.55535-S2.

So then, who's going to stick their head above the parapet and say without all shadow of a doubt which is the correct oil to use? Clearly I knew what went in the 1.2, and despite what I can see in my own owners manual, the doubters have made me start to doubt what I see before my eyes, so even I am having difficulties about what the TwinAir uses! I'm more than happy to call a Fiat dealership, but I wonder how many different answers I'll get :p So technical gurus who actually work at a dealership and service these cars all the time, speak up!
