Talking 1.3 Mjet2 95bhp - Custom Induction Kit

So some of you may remember the custom induction kit I built for the 1.9 Mjet Grande Punto.

https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-pun...ction-kit.html

This weekend I decided to have some fun with the 500 and see what I could do.

First steps were to take some measurements:

Oil Breather 23mm OD
MAF Sensor 70mm OD
Turbo 40mm OD
Bumper Cut Out 56mm ID (near where the factory air feed starts behind the bumper)

After this was done using MultiECUScan it was time to take some air flow measurements for comparison. First with the factory system intact and then with a single cone air filter fitted directly to the MAF sensor.

The pipework from the turbo other than a flat spot changes size and shape quite smoothly so unless its in the way for routing I see no need to replace it at present.

As we can see from the data gathered and the graphs above, the factory airbox is rather restrictive. With the cone filter we see approximately 100mg/stroke more air taken in right across the rev range. There's the potential that if a double cone filter is used that will rise a touch further but space wise there's nowhere for it.

Next steps are to decide where the filter should live and then to pipe back toward the MAF. A BMC CDA (Or cheaper clone) might be the way forward and would fit after a 45 degree silicone bend in place of the factory air box.

this could be interesting, From how the 500's engine bay is very cramped and from when you shown me what others have done with induction kits on these cars.

Like I've said before its a shame you can take the induction downwards from the turbo

A bonnet vent simmilar to the Abarth Assetto Corse race cars would be ideal. They have a panel filter sat after the MAF with no top cover right under the bonnet vent. Not too sure I have the money to justify having one crafted and I doubt there are many Assetto Corse bonnets knocking about.

Ill sort you one of them bonnets out alex ill bring my grinder down to the next meet sorted :P

how about (sounds chavvy) raiseing the bonnet ever so slighty?
upgrade the pipe to sillicone as dosnt that help air flow?

Looks very interesting Alex, I look forward to seeing the finished results however you decide to deal with the bonnet issue.

I too would be interested in the results. Can't help thinking that a CAI whilst increasing air flow will only result in better bhp at higher revs. With a petrol engine I can see the benefits but with a diesel engine the power dies higher up the rev band. Would you not be better off with a A500 since I'm unsure of the long term performance impact of a MJ.

Haha! If I could go back to when I bought the 500 and know that a few months down the line I'd have moved to within a mile of my workplace and that I'd no longer be travelling 500+ miles a week then yeah A500 would have most certainly been on the cards.

The Mjet is here to stay for a while yet though. DPF doesnt seem to upset on the Mjet2 that it gets a few short trips a week. The highest clogging ive seen so far is 75%. Multiecuscan reports this as "normal clogging".

As the other half has the car and she is away this weekend I wont get much further any time soon but i'll certainly be updating this thread as and when i do.

Not much of an update at present but heres a new picture. Its been performing really well and the difference can certainly be felt.

Personally I'm a fan of the turbo spool and wastegate chatter sounds and they come through nicely.

Had the opportunity to get Pete (GSR) under the bonnet at Brookland's who given the space constraints validated the design and gave some tips for improving it so I'll be looking into those over the summer.

Meanwhile GSR are developing a kit I believe though I'm unsure of its routing.

To kick this old topic and before removing any pipes and hoses from my stock intake system (to reduce the risk of doing unnecessary damage): Isn't 40mm OD for the turbo connection an odd size? Most available silicone hoses are 38mm ID or 41mm ID according to the internet. Can anybody clear this up for me?

You are comparing Inners and Outers there..

The wall thicknesses will make a big difference
