Hiya,

Our TA is up to 18k and due it's first service. What sort of price are people paying for this service? My local dealer quoted £220, which seems like a con for a simple service and an oil change!

I'm tempted to take it somewhere independent, but really not sure I can be bothered with the possible aggro further down the line if we have to claim under the warranty! Has anyone had any issues with this?

If we go independent, is there to anything to make sure of? Other than they use the right oil etc?

Cheers

Will

Welcome to the FF WillG.

Very recent thread on servicing (Click here) and what's needed on your first service at 18K needs a bit more than just oil & an oil filter.

Would suggest getting it organised asap since a number on here and in particular with the TA would have already had a low mileage (oil change) done before a first service at 18K.

A search on 'service' in the 'title' on advanced search will bring up plenty of threads...

Use the wrong oil and you will cause serious damage, if going down the independent route YOU supply the correct oil, get this from dealership and retain receipt.

Apparently (might be a idea to phone a garage about this) there is a 'purge' procedure that must be done on twin air and multi air engines after changing the oil using diagnostic equipment.

my 18k service is approaching and decided to shop around this morning and lowest figure so far is £220 as dealer has an over on, quotes so far are:

Dealer A £355.81 (supplied the car so over my dead body will they touch it)
Dealer B £321.19
Dealer C £220 (over to end of May but were about £249)

Awaiting a call from my local service centre on this.

Appears if you have AC they fleece you with a filter change and of course the plugs need changing (thank heavens its doesn't need 4)

Ironically cheapest dealer is an hour away but were first class when i had some warranty work done and gave excellent customer service and its worth travelling

Others said they'd price match which to me means they are just over charging in the first place

When I had a 1-year oil and filter change (£120) at around 10000m the dealer said the 18000 mile service would be about £300, so you've done well at £220

well local service centre came through with £214, pitty they took 4 hours to phone me with that price as they've lost out this time but £140 cheaper than the main dealer 10 miles away so proof it pays to shop

So what if they're overcharging in the first place? The only thing that matters is what you end up paying :)

if my least favoured dealer had been the cheapest then the price match card would be played with someone i actually want to use

in reality maxi i'm not a person who extracts the absolute maximum saving out of everything, which is probably why you will be a far richer man than me, but i'm a real fussy f@cker when it come to who does work on our cars

so car booked in tomorrow for a while you wait which suits my diary

Thanks for the info guys.

I've been doing some ringing around today too - which was hard work (it's almost like they don't want your business!). First dealer came in at @ £395!! This eventually dropped to £250, next dealer, of the same franchise started at £250 and dropped to £220. Third dealer, who were by far the most polite and helpful, and had the best booking availability came in straight away at £198!!!

Figured I might save £50 odd through an independent, but just don't really have time to sort the parts, live without a car etc and then have possible warranty issues further down the line.

Lets just hope they do a good job.......

It's hardly hard to source the parts. Go to shop4parts, order parts and then call the dealer to price match.

A twinair will be cheaper to service due to having 2 less plugs so my service cost of ~£120 @ a Fiat dealer is what you should aim to pay. No warranty issues, you can get a courtesy car if you want to.... etc etc etc :)

The dealer in Greece is only charging for the (ok highly marked up of course) parts with labor on the house since customer demand is falling all the time! By the time of my service i may ask them for a quote.

My next service is the 38 k (60000 km) service which is generally a whopper of a service. Check timing belt, change oil and filters and plugs and brake fluid and most likely some brake pads as well! Oh and i think my tires will eventually need replacing!
