Following numerous complaints from consumers about unrealistic fuel economy data, the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) is reviewing the Type Approval for a "significant" number of models of cars. Apparently, all FIAT models fitted with the new 0.9l TA engine will be included in this review. There is concern that the officially published figures are unrepresentative of typical production vehicles and that this may render the existing VCA data misleading both to potential customers and to the regulatory bodies responsible for tax and benefit-in-kind (BIK) calculations. This is now being treated as "a matter of urgency" by the VCA as this may constitute a violation of EU rules on fair competition.

A number of cars have been secretly purchased at random and taken to the Millbrook proving ground in Bedfordshire, where detailed testing has been taking place "over the past few weeks". Following these tests, the VCA expect to make a number of changes to the official car data website and it is expected that all new cars registered after midnight on the date the changes come into effect will be taxed at the newly-applicable rates.

At the time of posting this, the official VCA website has been taken down for updates:

http://carfueldata.direct.gov.uk/

so it would seem that would-be 500TA owners have little time to lose.

It is still unclear whether cars already registered will be affected, but as with older cars now, there will probably be an exemption - so get your orders in quickly, folks, particularly if you plan on claiming an exemption from congestion charging.

Actually I heard from a friend that those official figure were published exactly two years ago today.

Still love mine mind you.

That's a good 'heads up' for wannabe UK TA owners looking to avoid the congestion charge - although they would be restricted to stock models.

I have been secretly questioning some of the CO2 figures for the 520D at under 120grs/km (Band A for us in Ireland) and a number of the Porsches at 225grs/km. I can't see the current system lasting. Also it will only be time before the London congestion charge ceiling will be changed to 80grs/km which really means Electric powered. Can't think of one petrol / diesel powered car in pipeline that will beat that figure.

Before anyone panics too much, and since it's now after 12 O'Clock, I'll just add this is my April 1st contribution to the forum ;).

But it's a fair warning to anyone buying a car on the basis of its fiscal advantages - these can disappear overnight on the whim of the government of the day. And you're right - manufacturers are taking the p**s out of the system and it's become essentially meaningless as a comparison tool.

Oh Dear, Stock up on Hot Pasties, 1st Class Stamps, Fuel and now TA's will have to move to a bigger house.

Good joke, however their was a hint of this in the budget.
Something along the lines of - "now that cars have become more fuel efficient we have to make sure that all road users pay their way" - i.e. if you have bought a fuel efficient car to be green or save on road tax we''ll still get you.

The sheriff of Nottingham says you will be charged £288 to park your car at work on the land owned or leased by your employer.

Did anyone see the cool tax on Champagne :) All coolers must now be turned off to save the planet as energy needs to be diverted to transport raw materials to make fuel cells for cars and solar cells for houses.
