Hi all,
I'm needing more room in my 500 1.4 Sport to go camping.
I dont want to change my car.Does anyone know if its possible to fit a Tow ball to the 500 to enable me to tow a small trailer?
Has anyone done this?
Best wishes,
Oggie.

We've got a Westfalia detachable system on our 1.2 500 Sport. It was fitted by Towequipe (a Coventry firm, I think) but the work was arranged by Rockingham Cars in Corby and carried out in their workshop. The beauty of this German system is that it totally "disappears" when not in use. The electric socket is hinged and swings up behind the bumper. The towball locks into a vertical tube arrangement and comes with a storage bag and set of keys.

The Westfalia part number is 306 311. Cost (supply and fit) was £295 - July 2009 price. Not the cheapest option, but well made with German quality and a very neat solution. I would think that a 1.4 would easily manage to tow a smallish camping trailer.

I've a Thule/Brink towbar, fitted by Indespension ( a firm with outlets nationwide) for £250.
The 500 is able to tow quite a reasonable weight - 800kg - so a camping trailer would be a doddle. Plenty of small caravans are available at under this weight too, although you should bear in mind that their high sides can lead to difficulties when towing through crosswinds or around trucks.

Thanks all for your responses. We are going to have the Westphalia detachable Tow Bar done at PF Jones in Nottingham.
Thanks for your help,
Oggie.
