They can clone your numberplates v5 or not. It's one of the reasons why it's not reccomended to post your plates on the net. If I was wanting to clone a numberplate for a 500 where do you think I'd look? That's right..... www.fiatforum.com/500

Don't worry about it, you'll be fine.

I caught up the other day with a not-so-old episode of Fith Gear on Bravo (I'm sad I know. :D), stealing number plates is all the rage apparently, that allows crooks to drive off petrol stations without paying (obviously), park anywhere and make a mockery of speed cameras. Don't know how hard it is to duplicate them, but then again if you know the "right" people....
I don't mean to be dramatic and overreacting sharpyboy, just to let you know that as you fear it it could happen if it fell into the wrong hands.

I'd be more worried that they had my address details and the V5 ownership of the vehicle documents.

If they broke into your house, stole your car keys and made off with your car, they could sell it very easily with the V5 and car keys

That said,.. the odds of that happening are very small unless the V5 was stolen from the Post Sorting Office or DVLA in the first place and its a huge conspiracy

I would say no they couldn't

In the old days you just walked into Halfords and asked them to make up a number plate, this meant it was easy to fake the ID of a car.

Several years ago, the rules were changed, only registered places can make plates and you have to take the V5 document as proof of ownership, this applies even if you want an extra plate made to go on a trailer.

However, you also need proof of ID.

This is info from the DVLA

I don't understand this nonsense about not showing your number plate on the internet! my car can sit in the supermarket carpark for hours with it's number plates on full show, I pass thousands of people when I drive every day - what's the big deal about the internet, if you wanted a number plate, there are far easier ways to find one, but without the V5 and a matching passport - what use is it??

Reputable suppliers like halfords won't do you a set of plates without documentation, but criminals cloning cars will just make them up themselves - the equipment isn't costly. I wouldn't worry too much about s lost v5 though. If by some chance it is used in fraud it will be to pass a different stolen car off as yours rather than actually going after yours.

What Dr Zoidberg says is completely true, you can get plates without a V5 or ID if you find the right place.

About displaying your plates on the internet. Yes people can see your plates on the road BUT displaying your plates on the net just makes it easier for them to find you.

And I guess that crooks would choose to duplicate a plate number from far away rather than one found in the same city, even same county (just in case the two cars were to meet). And what's better than internet for that? For instance here alone we have people from Cornwall and Newcastle......

Exactly. You don't clone the numberplate of a car which is likely to see you now do you? If people want to post their plates they're free to :) You won't catch me doing it.
