Hi all
apologies for a long absence from the site.
I have been rather busy with other projects, work & family.

My 500D is nearly complete and I will hopefully get around to updating my thread over the next few weeks.

I am now ready to register my 500D and just wondered if anyone has any advice?

I don't have a log book or any previous paperwork from when it was brought into the UK from Italy.
I do have the NOVA.
The chassis number is clearly readable on the bodywork.
I do have the original chassis plate.

The question I have is do I need confirmation from a club etc of the identity of the vehicle? Surely photos of the vehicle and information from various websites will show this vehicle is a 500D and the chassis number tells me its a 1962 500D based on the chassis numbers listed on various sites.
Do I need an MOT? I did with my L but that was before the exemption came into play.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi Sean, good to read that the job is nearly done.

I’m in the process of registering at the moment. You will need a certificate of origin to prove age, without original Italian documents DVLA will only accept proof of age from a club that they recognise or from the manufacturer. DVLA do not require an MOT. I spoke with Rod Scanes of the 500club who can give you a headed letter to prove age and would need pictures of all round the car plus shots of inside the car with a picture of the brake / clutch assembly, Under the rear bonnet including the engine number and would require a pencil rubbing on tracing paper of the chassis no, the one that is stamped in the bulk head just below the chassis plate. His email is: [email protected] I didn’t manage to nail him down on cost.

I am awaiting a certificate or origin from Fiat Heritage in Turin, I was going with the 500club but heard back from Turin after a three month wait and assumed, incorrectly, that my certificate was on it’s way but three weeks later I’m still waiting. They apparently have just one person working in the department that produces the certificates. Fiat charge €70.

....the most comprehensive and precise reply on this subject I've ever seen!
The stamped chassis number is very important. There was a transposed digit in the paperwork for Murf, my non-imported car, after it had been given an age-related number. I had to drive to the DVSA office and have the inspector examine the number before I could get back the original registration. The procedure was the same as you describe; the previous chairman of the Fiat 500 accepted a collection of high-res images of the car from all sides, under the bonnet and the dashboard. I still have the certificate issued and I think it was £30 about seven years ago.

Co-incidentally this arrived in email this evening. I wonder how long I have to wait now for the signed original which is apparently going to be sent by courier?

Thanks Ian,
I will give the club a go first as this seems to be the quickest route.

How are you getting on with the registration Sean?

I got my V5 back this morning and quickly got some number plates ordered. I’m now hoping for some proper summer weather to enjoy 500 driving again as it seems like travel in our motorhome won’t be happening for a few months at the minimum.

I tried that route.

I did e-mail the Centro Storico Fiat who kindly replied to say my vehicle was a Fiat 500D but they wanted 70 Euros for a piece of paper to say my vehicle was a 1962 model. They could not provide any further information as they have no other information about colour, interior, engine number, market destination.

There is plenty of info on the internet that lists the chassis numbers and their years to provide me with that already.
So I contacted the Fiat 500 Club Italia at [email protected] who provided me with a certificate of homologation and also confirmed its year of manufacturer.

I have documented all the info from both Centro Storico & the fiat Club as well as information from various websites, photos & certificate of homologation and send my V55 off last Wednesday with a covering letter. So hopefully they will send me the registration within the next 10 days.

If nobody actually has any model/chassis number specific data then I cant see what else I can do?

I got to the same point and mine got thrown back to me:bang: DVLA told me that they won’t accept ageing proof from a source they don’t recognise. Whether they will recognise proof from the Fiat 500 Club Italia I don’t know but keep fingers crossed for you. As you say the €70 piece of paper from Centro Storico Fiat gives minimal info but it has proved worth the expense for me.

As my friends in Italy continually point out the Fiat Factory records were lost and the inner circle of the Fiat 500 Club of Turn actually provide Fiat with information....

You could even pay £65 for an ASI Gold certificate to tell you your car looks like it is panted, trimmed and mechanically correct for a Fiat 500 D

All done now! I got my plates from Polar Automotive in Tonbridge, Kent. Very happy with their service - 10 days from order to delivery. Recommend them (y)

Unfortunately, due to a seven digit registration, I am not able to use the stainless steel surround on the front plate but never the less I am super pleased with the look and that I got through the process at last :D
