i have a question about headlight adjustment mechanism on a 71 500
it has two adjustment screws. there is one spring from the frame and to inside of body .
the two adjustment screws have no springs. my guess is that there should be a compression spring that the adjustment screws pass through to apply counter tension to try to push the light frame away from the car body and the adjustment screws would pull back against those springs when the adjustment screws are tightened.
does anyone understand this mechanism. i think the missing springs should be between the car body and headlight frame with the adjustment screw passing through. ????

There is only ONE spring to each headlamp. The headlamp is located by a tang sticking out from the side of the headlamp frame which goes into a slot in the side of the headlamp aperture in the body and by the spring. The 2 adjusters should have only their heads poking through their locating holes, from the front towards the rear. The spring holds the headlamp adjuster heads tightly into their locating holes. I have seen adjuster screws screwed through these locating holes and then into the head lamp --this in incorrect. The 2 adjusting screws are positioned so that one screw adjusts the headlamp aim horizontally and the other screw is for vertical adjustment. It is a very simple system, but it works.

Thank you. I think I get it. Clarify you say the heads poke front to rear ? The screws enter from inside bonnet pointing towards front of car. Do you mean rear to front ?

I think I have what you describe as incorrect. But will the heads of the adjusting screws go through their locating holes in car body. ? So the screw heads mounts from front of locating hole (front to rear ) The flange of the adjusting screw sits on front side of locating hole.

Think you have got it now, but to keep it simple as then I understand as well.

The two locating/adjusting screws are fitted to the headlight assemblies, the head light assembly is then offered up to the body and secured with the spring clip and the adjuster screw heads protrude through the holes in the body (just) adjustment is then made by screwing in our out the relevant screw head for horizontal or vertical adjustment.

The headlights should not be put in position and then the adjusting screws screwed in.

That is correct gentlemen---the adjusting screws are fitted into the headlamp prior to the headlamp being fitted. That way, just the heads of the 2 adjusting srews are poking through their locating holes
