Hi all - new US 500L owner here. 1971 model. Car hasn't even arrived yet, but starting to plan. Quick question: anyone have a creative solution for mounting US license plates, while retaining the original Italian plates in their original position? My car is coming with historic black Italian replica plates that I will keep on for fun. So I need to mount the US plates (both front and rear, unfortunately) in alternative spots. I think I can hang them below the front and rear bumpers, but looking for bracket ideas that don't involve drilling holes in the bumpers, if possible. I'm sure I can work it out, but looking to learn from someone eles's craftiness. Anyone done similar?

L brackets attached to the car body from underneath, right? That's what I was thinking. I don't want to put holes in the bumper or interrupt the bumper line with a plate.

thanks!

AH no I put mine under the bumper via small holes
I think it looks pretty good, just hangs down. I have a feeling if it went into the body from underneath it would be obscured by the bumper itself.

Here you go. A good solution for the US while still being able to mount a correct Italian plate. I fashioned a bracket using wingnuts for the rear to mount on rear bumper. For front I used L brackets. There are two small holes on the underside of the front bumper to fasten them to. Mine off as I just showed by Cinquecento at a local Concours. Hope this helps :)

bravo! Yes, I will probably looks for some informal shows next spring. I always seem to find them the same day they're happening though!

I'm 3,500 miles away so I've no idea what the local laws are for licence plates where you come from. In the UK you are only allowed to display British plates in the position you show in your photographs, although you can have foreign plates elsewhere on the vehicle, or, for a classic car like the 500L, local plates in the style of the car's home country.

Near me there are a small number of classic "Yanks" and at least two have UK plates but in the US pressed metal type; one a '72 Mustang Mach 1 and the other a slightly older fastback and although the colour of the plates are white front and yellow rear, the dimensions of the plates are more Kentucky Bourbon than Single Malt.

Alternatively, there is a mid-60s Alfa Duetto (a-la The Graduate) with a very small front plate which he is allowed to use but with the UK registration number. At shows he simply sticks the original Italian plates the car came with over the top.

Rather than making up a bracket, is it perhaps not better to just cover up the originals with local plates and then uncover them at shows?

North shore, Suffolk. You should bring it to some of the local shows going on. I would love to see yours. I just won at the Americana Concours d'Elegance in Manhasset.
I wouldn't mind a small wager that it didn't look that good the day it came off the showroom floor.

She's a credit to you.

Hi, my front bumpers came with holes already in the lower lip which I attached an L shaped bracket, the rear ones I attached using a 'silentbloc' rubber, cut it in half (because it was too thick) then drilled right through to pass a bolt through, this keeps the plate off of the bodywork and allows for the curve in the bonnet.
