Right as i plan to spend a bit of money on tuning the stilo 1.6 up, i thought that i should really make a start on the preperation work that i can afford. So the obvious thing was the clutch this will inevitably need to to be replaced and if i am right is something that is increasingly getting worse. Every so often i get a little bit of power drop and the sweet smell of clutch after certain maneuvers:devil:
So does anybody have any advice on uprating the stilo clutch. As of next month i will be able to save a wee bit of money i calculated around £350-400 and the rest i can borrow from the bank of mum and dad (bless em). So how much more would i need. Please be nice i am a bit of a noob to all this. Also if anybody fancies helping me fit it i will reward you well :)

I dont have a clue yet TBH im just starting to prepare the car for Big BHP (well big for a 1.6). I can afford not to scrimp the only way is up with my career (I hope )
A turbo is looking on like being on the cards though basically i want to build a car that is drivable to im going to need some big BHP to run the alt.
That clutch looks a little cheap thanks for showing me but will it really be able to handle the strain  I was thinking £600-800

they also do a 'competition' spec clutch which is around £270.

good luck with this madness

you know there is a much better way to spend your money.

give it to me so i can finish my car

A turbo conversion, done properly, will set you back more than £3000. The car will also be off the road for a while, as the work needed to complete the conversion is massive. You cant just bolt a turbo on and think thats it.....

i'd drop in a 2.4 JTD instead than the hugeeeeeeee amount of work and massiveeeeeeeee reliability problems you'll end up with on the 1.6.

also you'll be the coolest person in the universe having a 3 door yellow 2.4 JTD stilo with well over 200bhp

Bozzy had one of these clutches and spoke highly of it. im planning on one in the very distant futue

Stu, in simplton bullet point terms outline exactly what you want to do to the stilo, because all your talk lately has turned it into a transforming dancing citroen c4 clone :p

Oz, the clutch was a beast! I remember the blokes at motormech saying that it was so much more heavy duty than they had seen on a Stilo. Recommend it instantly.

I don't know turbo's very well, as I'm mainly a fan of the standard twin cam fiat engine, starting with the Ritmo Abarth with double Webers. It was mainly doing 130 BHP but was easily tuned up - without turbo. But with a gearbox ending up like metal cereal. So... think of the gearbox, clutch, driveshafts - and most important: Brakes. This would be a challenge to get street legal in Norway as it would differ wastly from the type approval of that specific car. You should also consider another alternator (that the ECU would handle) to cope with the ICE you've got in there. I don't know if the Nordic Stilos have other alternators, but I remember it took several years after its release, before the new Panda arrived here due to the size of the battery, alternator, heater, wiring loom etc. so the car could handle the temperatures. I've still not seen one in the real world. (Wasn't "real world" a show on MTV for 15 years ago?) But I'm looking forward to the results.

have considered doing me clutch (it's not difficult really) but decided against it - gearbox is heavy (around 60 kg.. i've been told) and though i can easily lift 60 - it is dangerous to do so under the car (when 60 kg just drops on you – it is possible you won’t be able to take the slack quick enough not to get squished): in other words to do the job properly you will need to support your engine (i assume it is held in place similarly to a 1.8) and have an adjustable trolley/lifter to fix/hold/move the gear box - attempting this without equipment is suicidal (also it is easy to knock your new clutch when fitting the gearbox back - hence warping it). A good fiat approved alfa trained garage can fit one for around 600 inc parts and labor - since parts are yours - expect 350 - 400 squid for the job

Well i have access to the equipment i just cant use it myself as it is at a friends work so i would rather try and find somebody who can do it with so i can help and learn.
Perhaps an Engine conversion might be a good idea, isnt the JTD an Alfa engine OZ so can anybody tell me what sort of work would be involved and what would i have to do about the gearbox and clutch etc. I dont want to do any tuning yet i need to save the money over the next year or so.
Something tells me that i should be saving for a deposite on a house so i will have to do that and just do the car slowly.
I already plan to change the alternator but i am still putting the battery in the boot, and need to do TB3 etc so i thought i would do the clutch first. Im not desperate for the alt because im not booming the install yet there is still a long way to go before that.

Right i have set aside the clutch for now and have decided to leave the stilo's fate in the hands of Pete as i want to use the current 1.6 engine.
Can you imagine how he will react when he asks "what sort of power are you after."
I will say "I will write it on a piece of paper for you sir so brace your self"
He will say ":bang::mad:(n):eek: 200bhp fcuk offfffff" then kick me out the door

No ..... I think Stu has a foot up the arse fetish :D

as well as....

:D

You want 200bhp from a NA tuned 1.6?

Who said anything about NA :D Na we will see im sure that i am being optimistic. I do realise that the Stilo will actually max at 160bhp. But im mad and Petes German so im sure that we can come up with something completely stupid between us.
I still havnt figured out how to fund it so if anybody would like to make a donation to "Project fastest 1.6 stilo with 10 ton of weight in the boot" PM me for my pay pal account. (y)
