General Poor mans Stratos...

better the devil you know?
bit steep for no mot and no use in 10 years but I suppose its an earlier 1500.

I like the Abarth but only 175bhp for £30,000???

I could build a Hawke Stratos for that with 300bhp at least.

That rot box almost Uno Turbo powered Faran has been sold and relisted six times now.

There's a better looking all silver one nearby that could be worth a punt.

Mine has a charging fault (new V regulator ordered £15) and a leaking water pump so I've got a new Tipo one for a tenner off ebay...

For the record...

I guess it is a lot but it looks like a pretty faithful and painstaking replica

I've given up buying cars on eBay for Lent so I can concentrate on my X1/9 and Panda. Hopefully getting one or both on the road for the resurrection.

The GTV was too good for my commute to work so I swapped it for a Punto GT that gave me ideas of fitting a turbo to my X1/9 but it's a fiddle fart of a job bypassing all the modern ecu and immobiliser crap so when the "bit of a project" Punto turned out to be a bottomless pit I gave it away for scrap money £350

I'll get my Panda sorted first as she's the most neglected and then turn my attention the X1/9 and finally find out where the chuff the bloody clutch line actually goes.

Watch this space. ;)

Good news! Ebay is very tempting...

Just got mine on the road again after new water pump and alternator. I think the water pump seal got cooked when the head gasket was blown. When the system was pressurised alot. At one point I opened the expansion tank at a petrol station, with an old jumper over the top and it blew a 20ft geyser. I was lucky not to get burned. Learnt the lesson. It was a very cold day...

I've spotted a 400 quid X1/9 gf on gumtree very local to me. So tempting to get a restoration project...

Now for the 30mm lowering springs and new shocks.

Hi all

Bit weird finding this post as I'm now the owner of this car. Had it for a couple of months now and it's already in 1000 pieces across the garage.

Great to see there's a record of the work done, looks like you did a great job liquid knight compared to how it was before!

I think the plan I'm going with is a complete restoration, already started to weld in new panels to replace the rust and I think the engine might get spiced up slightly.

Is there anything particularly worrying I should be aware of?

Cheers
James

Following a dodgy engine removal, I stripped down the chassis to look at rust, and after grinding the sealant off one of the arches I found the situation worse than I expected.

Pictures do not do this justice, but I'll get there... One day

After cutting back the rust and spraying the insides of the panels with waxoyl, I fashioned some replacements from steel plate and welded them right in.

I'm well aware it's terrible handiwork, but it seems strong enough...

Also had chance to start sprucing up the cylinder head...

Well the work goes on...

Still endlessly trying to repair the rust but focusing more on the engine at the moment.Have gone for a light blue colour scheme, mainly because I won't end up painting the car that colour (still haven't decided what colour to go for so any suggestions are very welcome.)

Got hold of a Weber DCOE 40, and I'll get another at some point to hopefully boost power slightly. Making my own manifold though which is proving to be more difficult than I expected.

Besides that, nothing else has really happened, bit of a slow progress I guess!

Well time will tell! I hope so, they'll intrude into the rear boot but I'm hoping to modify the rear bulkhead and put the air filters in the boot. Theory is the air should be a fair bit cooler than the engine bay and shouldn't eat up too much of the room, but this is all a guess so far!

Hi all

Work still going on the Fiat, but engine troubles with the other car has impared things slightly...

Worked mainly in the wheels, they're pretty poor condition, but they've scrubbed up alright!

Doing a mod on the cylinder head: Fitting Punto 1.6 intake valves as they're 39.6mm over the current 36mm so maybe a few houses to be gained there...

Going to town with the cylinder head! I guess that needs valve seats doing by a specialist? I think the standard 1500 is pretty rapid for what i'm used to anyway so yours should fly! Its a shame to loose the rear boot though. The frunk looks more useful than it is especially when the roof is stowed. looks like your making some good progress. Have you checked out the spare wheel well? I have just given mine a liberal dose of Dinitrol!

Gold wheels look great I'm planning to paint my Trons gold as I've a two tone blue car dark and light blue with gold pin stripe.

Colours! I always imagined a Kawasaki green X1/9 - not sure of the name of the original Kermet frog 70's green. Dark blue works really well with gold wheels!
There was also a nice original burnt orange colour... Yellow also looks good!

Most colours look good on an X1/9. I'd be thinking original colours to maximise value in the future. The two tone schemes were really to help with the 1500 bumpers, I personally think the single colours complement the body shape much more - as the designer intended!
