Just got back from booking a service and timing belt change at Fiat Gainmanor, Newcastle. Excellent lovely people in there.

Anyway what do you think of these prices:
Goldcare service: £135 inc vat. - Quoted me £160 inc vat. orginally then rang me back and told me it would only be £135 inc vat. :)
Timing belt + tensioner: £175 inc vat.

Also as an added extra she gave me free MOT's for life there. She said it was some promotion they are currently running. Only catch is if it fails you have to have the problems fixed there or you'll be charged for the MOT, not bad for a mornings work me thinks. :D

Prices sounded good to me (y)

Just been quoted £357 by Fiat locally to Goldcare service mine, change the timing belt & change the brake fluid. Dunno if tensioner replacement is included, will ask when i'm ready to book it in next 1.5K or so :)

The MOT for life thing is the clincher... is this a general Fiat promotion or only that dealer/dealer chain? Did you buy your JTD off them? Sorry for the questions but these sort of offers usually only come with cars you bought off participating dealers... if its a general Fiat promotion with soonish expiry then would consider having my service done early to take advantage see ;)

Think it's just this particular dealship but not sure. Its down on there website as coming with cars bought new or used from them, but I didn't buy mine from them and they still gave me the promotion so not sure how it works.

That's an interesting quote

Original GoldCare Petrol + timing belt change (inc tensioner) is £309 (£339 for JTD)

So your quote of £310 (I assume petrol) is exactly £1 more :) which still makes it excellent value (y)

Re: Finally the rattle is gone! JTD owners read here

Just checking coz the cambelt & service is looking near to £700 as it is  (
Liam, even by main dealer standards, that's an outrageous price (n)

Gold Service + Cambelt change should work out a lot cheaper surely.

Even cheaper if you can find a good Fiat specialist garage to do it. I got them to change the gearbox oil too (plus the rather expensive engine oil I use) and was a mere fraction of what you're thinking of spending.

Thats what i thought Argo, but id phoned 3 main dealers & got the following prices:

Grays of Warwick:
*48k Service - £415
*Cambelt only - £270
*Cambelt & Waterpump - £380
*Cambelt Service (Cambelt & Service, no waterpump) - £705

Alan Gibson, Basingstoke:
*Service - £473.12
*Basic Service - £192
*Cambelt (no waterpump) - £379.85

Souls of Milton Keynes:
*Service - £374
*Gold Care (Fiat UK subsidised service) - £200
*Cambelt Service (Major service & cambelt but no waterpump) - £649
*Cambelt only - £254
*Waterpump only - £140

Pretty expensive i thought, and looks like you may agree!? So then i phoned an independant, where ive taken my previous Fiat Punto & they quoted the following:

Palmer & Philips (Fiat & Alfa Specialist in Oxford):

*Major Service - £200
*Cambelt & Tensioner - £285, plus Paraflu - £15
*Waterpump - £50 (Parts only, no labour charge)
*Total - £550

On all the quotes it looks like im going to need to add £50 parts & £50 labour to replace the gearbox mounting, probably more than £50 labour for the main dealers. So yeah, Stilo ownership is not proving too cheap, and weirdly its just the servicing costs & not because of any floors in the build quality.

Btw Argo, sorry if this is abit off topic, i dunno whether it may be better as a separate thread about servicing costs, but i'll leave that up to you!

Re: Finally the rattle is gone! JTD owners read here

Liam, our cars much be similar in age... looking for the same service myself.

I've looked around and i've got it to £450-£500.

Go back to Fiat and ask them if they can lower it, £500 is a good bit of business for anyone- i'm sure a lot of places will be willing to undercut eachother..

Quick question though, fiat themselves say the waterpump is not a neccessity, but they will look at it while the belt is off and replace if need be. Is it worth the extra just simply going for a new pump?

Mines a Sept 2004 54 reg, on 55,000 miles.

Where abouts have quoted for the work on yours then fella? Im weighing up what to do at the moment, been thinkin of allsorts; getting a Stilo with the work already done, getting a 57/08 plate Bravo & not having any bills for a few years or just biting the bullet and paying for the JTD to have her work done.

I think the first two garages ive quoted above are so majorly overpriced, that there's little hope for them getting my custom. But Souls of Milton Keynes and our local independant are quite close tbh. The main plus of going to a main dealer for me, is that i'll get to borrow a new courtesy car & get an idea if i like it or not. Our independant has a Mk1 Punto and i know what thats like as ive driven it before! Plus theres the increased chances of back up from Fiat UK if anythin like the springs fail, if it's always been maintained by the main dealer network.

Fiat seem to say the waterpump isnt essential, but there's alot of reports of the waterpump on Alfa 147 Multijets failing, and some cases of the same on the 147 JTD & Stilo JTD, at anything from around 45,000 miles. So ive kinda decided to do it, because if i dont and then it ceases, it'll take the belt with it, damage the engine, and i'll need another new cambelt again anyway, so for the sake of another £50-£100, i might aswell do it all in one go. Thats my thoughts anyway!

Remember, Fiat (and some of the dealers ive phoned) also say the cambelt doesnt need doing till 72,000 miles, but there's a few examples of them snapping around 50,000, so it's tricky believing what Fiat say sometimes :(

Liam if you want it doing with us mention me + this forum and I'll see if we can save you a little extra on those prices.

Glad to see someone shopping around :)

Thanks Chris, i appreciate it :)

I will certainly get in contact if i decide to go ahead - i've stalled a little bit coz im jobless at the moment, so holding onto the money till i know where my wages are coming from. But as soon as thats sorted, i must get the Stilo seen to as the service is overdue now, which is very unlike me :(
