Technical EGR Blanking on JTD

I think NOx (especially the N2O) destroys ozone layer. (Remember how the big fad worry in the 1980's was the hole in the Ozone layer). But disconnecting the EGR reduces the CO2 (affecting the new fad worry of greenhouse gasses and global warming).
poo..I think I'll have a beer.

nox is not part of the mot test for diesels, YET.(y)

i did mine the other week and its loads better now i used a beer can

beware, check it again!

see attached image, what happened to my tea can (the same as a beer can) blanking in a month

luckily it did not fall into the manifold and to the valves - but that could have happened easily, yikes... :bang:

so thin material like this (which you can cut with scissors) is safe only for a temporary test, otherwise it should be at least about a 1 mm thick

EGR's are a burden they reduce power, increase carbon, cause 90% of idle/flat spot problems.
End of the day you wouldn't breath your own farts in to reduce harmful gases coming out of you?

My last punto had two fitted, my new car needs one fitted, so how much of the environment was damaged to produce and dispose of them EGR valves? :(

Stu,

Can i be a cheeky git and ask to give the blanking plate a quick measure up.
I can whack a load and if anyone wants one i can post them in return for a small donation to the site.
Just need the hole centres measuring and the overall lemgth and width .
Again if its a problem no worries !!

Cheers for now

Sounds like a good idea to me Kev so I'll purchase one and send it direct to you mate, PM me your address.

Count me in for the carbon increase/idle&flat spot adding device delete plate! :D
Think there are just two different type's for JTD's isn't there?

When I first blanked mine it changed the car dramatically. Power came as soon as I pressed the go pedal. Now it feels back like it did before I blanked it maybe a touch better but nothing like when I first blanked it.

Any suggestions to look at?

Tiger boxes are much thicker. ;)

I wonder if the temp of the combustion was enough to melt the thin bits of coke can that entered the engine reducing the damage?

Add hot exhaust gases to two different metals and there will be some sort of corrosive reaction.

Thats why I previously posted this:
Metals like steel and tin react so its best to use atleast 1mm aluminium if you plan to blank the EGR permanently.

Using the same metals reduces the risk of a reaction.

I've had an aluminium blanking plate fitted to our Stilo for a few months now. Removed it and used it on my daughters car to check her EGR(black smoke everywhere), the plate still looked new apart from a little soot on one side.

I don't think there would be a difference in smoking between having a proper working EGR valve (one that's not stuck half closed/open) and a blanked one. Neighter you would notice any performance gains. The car came out of the factory with an EGR valve, right.. and didn't have any black smoke coming out of it, nor it felt underpowered, so in my opinion the problem would be that your EGR is just not closing properly...

Correct, the EGR isn't working properly. The car has 110,000 miles on it and I've stripped and cleaned the EGR twice, the second time I added the Restrictor Plate. I can't be arsed to keep cleaning the EGR so I'm blanking it off. People without any mechanical knowledge would find constant trips to the local garage expensive, blanking it off is easier and cheaper.
