General clock

General clock

I have a 2006 1.2 and have a problem with the clock and also the instrument electrics. If not used regularly when I come to switch on the display is correct. After I go to the start position the engine starts no problem but the electrics on the panel seems to die and then recovers. It is as if the electric feed to the cluster has died and then reswitches on. Of course this means that the clock has to be reset with the silly buttons that need to be held until the time is set. The dealer mentioned that it could/would be the battery but I have a load test battery tester and a multi meter that shows the battery and charging system are all OK. The engine starts first turn every time even after a few days or more no problem. I was thinking a relay or even bad contacts on the ignition switch. I have not got a Haynes so cannot work out the circuit. If the car is used regularly it seems to be ok. I am just about to sell the car to a relative and would like to fix this irritating fault if I can.

These are classic symptoms of a dying battery, especially as you say it is not used regularly.
Check the battery cables, positive all the way from battery to starter and negative from battery to body and onto the gearbox. A common issue is corroded or broken cables. They break inside the outer casing, so check carefully.

If you're still on your original battery, I'd say to go and get a new one. Sounds like the battery is on it's way out.

As I mentioned in the entry I have tested the battery with a load tester and when I went to charge it it did not require much of a charge. Anyway today for a change it has behaved impeccably but I will check the cables anyway. Thanks for your inputs, very helpful.
