Panda (Classic) Project Fallout

Introduction

let me introduce to you, the free panda 4x4 which was first spotted >>Here<<.
First off however, here is the plan:

i will (some how) make the panda look "Post Apocalyptic" yet keep it in a road legal state (so no spikes, sharp rusty edges sadly). We have all seen mad max right? all wanted to replicate a mad max style car?
well let me be the first to attempt this with a fiat panda 4x4.

if anyone here has seen the TV program "Defiance", you surely have seen the epic Doge Charger that looks post apocalyptic. i will be trying to aim for the same theme. with such things as an external roll cadge, external metal mesh / grills covering the windows, custom bull bar, reinforced rear bumper made from tubular metal, custom twin output exhaust, and many many more.

this project is going to be undertaken as cheaply as possible (excluding parts necessary for a safe road going vehicle). reusing as many things as i can find (in scrap yards, freebees), true to a real post apocalyptic constructed vehicle. i will also be taking the "rough is best look" (please note, i say Rough not Rat!) the panda its self of course will undergo all the rust prevention Talon went under when i got him.

anyway, i will leave you a few seconds to build up a mental picture of how a panda 4x4 could look in a post apocalyptic landscape while browsing some of these Pictures.......

ok.. that should do.

First off. i need to get the panda all well and good.
a few things are broken... the exhaust, the front suspension on the passenger side, both rear dampeners are rusted out, the doors are shot but i will try to fix them, the gear stick is really loose and all the roller bearings have dropped out, the wiring is a mess (mice attack!), there are no brakes.. and i mean no brakes, and lets not forget the underside rust.

so today i started by stripping out everything inside the car to get a good look at the floor pan and clean it all out (Dragon Man style!) i found the usual rust: the boot floor is a mess, but easy fixable, a seam has gone just behind the drivers seat anything forward of that seems to be OK, and the back of the sills are just gone so i will need to rebuild that.

the engine runs.. the vac advance line has split so its a bit rough on tickover but it seems good. the fuel tank seems good.. all the 4x4 stuff seems good.

i have go a few pictures took free by a professional photographer! (or should i say someone with an epic camera :p)

Here are a few picture, but please check out >This Album<

like i say, check out the photo album.

i will be keeping >Online video logs< of this, so keep a look out on Youtube too.
here are some videos, both are long but the second one is longer!

keep watching guys.. the jet wash will be coming out later today!

Edit:

This is how it looks now: :eek::eek: :slayer::slayer::slayer:

OMG I just lurve the air intake. I want one.....:slayer:

i got one of these industrial petrol (ride on!) vacuums from the scrap yard a while back.
the thing has been used that much that the drive axle had snapped. it was so beaten up that it was not worth selling.. the huge aluminium impeller/fan was missing a blade so it vibrated like hell.
here is a video of one in action:

Oh god I didn't mean you'd copied!

Rather if there were any ideas on the S15 build you would want to copy! :D

I'd love to get a car to do this or get a rat look kinda build going.

no no i was not implying that you said i was copying.. i just worded that wrong i guess :/
ill have to have a look.. maybe its time i did get some more ideas..

Even a lorry doesn't have an air intake that big.
Thats force feeding air in like a Turbo if you connect direct.
Put a 12v fan in it that makes the sound on a WW2 air raid siren and you've cracked it.
Dave

i tried to swap the insurance over from Talon to Fallout.

sadly the car is too old and i have not had my drivers licence long enough to declare major modifications like an engine change.

well i have had my licence just over 4 years so in april next year i will be able to insure.

looks like im going to have to swap talon back to a carburetor for now cheaper options all around im afraid.

That's a real shame John :(

I'm thinking of making my 4x4 fuel injected so your expertise will be most appreciated.

I have all the stuff on Fizzle - how hard can it be?

Might be easiest if you come over to mine for a day or two to do it though!

fuel injection on the 999cc fire engine requires the oil pump to be changed. this is why i am having all the issues with Talon at the moment. i used an injection system that does not require a crank position sensor and its really buggy.

AF i have to say for me are a complete rip off insurer. i have never had a sensible quote from them and fallout was was the same. Aviva quoted me a relatively sensible £451 with all mods declared BUT the engine size change. (they would not insure me as the car was 25 years old AND the engine size had changed)
AF quoted me £739 with NO MODS declared! No way i would go with them. with all mods declared they wanted just above £1200.

So if you leave the standard engine in they don't notice it's 25 years old

Try Admiral, not a great insurance company overall but they cover me (20 years old) on Char' (who's 23) with modifications (lowered, front seats swapped, alloys etc) and when I enquired they were happy to cover me should I do an engine change for very little extra (Currently pay £550 with mods now, wanted £610 with an engine change) :)

Blimey thats crazy, each insurer is different I guess. Aviva were £200 more than Admiral when it came to insuring my Punto, its better than last year though where they were over £1000 more!

It's hard to compare like that Cameron, you're maried now, up in Scotland, etc. Some insurance companies just don't want to insure certain" type" of people, sadly John probably fits in to that pattern. Time will show. My wife with driving licence just over 1 year (3y NCB) can drive over 300hp subaru with no increase in cost. Employment status/type does the most in my opinion.

spent most of the morning ringing around all of the "special" insurers (i could find doing google searches.. yes every one based in the UK) but every one is giving me quotes of over £1100.

the price seems to hover around the £500 mark.. but as soon as i mention that it is using the 1242cc engine the price just goes sky high.

so i have given up with insuring fallout this year. i have just got to hope next year at the end of april will be better.

not getting my hopes up. we live in a relatively lowish insurance zone, however now insurers do credit checks even though i pay the whole thing up front it makes it high.
I have never been in debt, never had any money issues, but the main problem is that i have never had a credit card.. i just dont need one! sadly though because of that it makes my insurance really high as for some reason i am a silly high risk driver.
makes no sense..

If you've never had credit you are a poor risk to them as they don't know you so assume the worst!

Insurance is the bain of our lives until you get older when everyone assumes you dawdle everywhere and never have accidents so premiums get less each year!

None of this helps you but I hear your frustration.

Chin up bud.

I increased my credit score majorly by getting a credit card through my current account, then only using it for my fuel once a month and paying it off online instantly afterwards. They way you never get charged interest (most cards give several weeks before they charge interest on any purchases you make. Just buying the stuff you buy normally and paying instantly will make a huge difference and cost nothing to do. (No interest or charges)

Talk to your bank, ask for a credit card.

Get a credit card.

Cut it up (or just lock it away).

I had to do that when i got rejected for a phone contract (yes, the ones that even school kids can get) by every company in the uk because "there is a history of bad debt at your address". Not me or my family, i or we have never been in any debt.... i live in a tenement and because one of my neighbours has had debt issues, they were tarring everybody in the building with the same brush. Could well be that some of your neighbours in the same postcode have debt, the systems companies use really can be that dumb.
