My first members motors thread... I thought the Panda VIP deserved it.

Collected the car today and drove the 185 miles home, mostly at a steady 70mph with no problems at all. It was rattle, bump and knock free with everything working very well.

Upon inspection the bodywork turned out to be in very good condition considering it was never garaged!.. there are a few problems though...

Some blistering on the arches of both front wings...not through the paint.. Yet!

The rear arches have been repaired and painted about 8 years ago..they are very very solid and the paint is good, but when you look along the line it's quite wavey.

Two tiny blisters on the bonnet lip.

As seen in the sale photo the door jam/A pillar bit where the interior light switch is located has the most rust issue.

I'm not sure that I'm going to rush into getting the above sorted out as I wish to keep it as an original/unrestored car as much as possible.

The service history is complete (27,000mls) all by the fiat dealership.

However....yes it was serviced 2000mls ago, but that was 4 years ago! It has had work done during this time for the mot (of which it has every year) as well as new maintance parts...and here comes the next but....4 years of sitting about which no coolant change means it does not exactly have a nice blue tinge to it. It has more of a brown hue to match the paintwork I guess. I think the Italian service thrash around the motorway loosened things up a bit.

The interior is lovely...not much else to say about it other than the headlining sags at the back. It comes with every extra including a digital clock above the rear view mirror.

It was funny to see two stickers inside the boot lid indicating the paint codes of the two tone paint job.

So, all in all a good start. Tomorrow I will be doing a coolant flush and an oil change as well as giving the car a wash and a good going over checking as much as possible...wish me luck..:D

Oh, and photos will follow once we get a different connection on the laptop...(y)

Think it could be a "He"... The number plate doesn't lend itself to a name other than when you read it using the T for tango B for bravo thing....

So, the reg starts with "C" for Charlie... That's the name Charlie..:D

Well now I know exactly what to look out for, the two tone brown one will be a car to avoid.... ;)

On a more serious note it did look a lovely car, especially the digital clock, I'm not getting my hopes up that my future Panda will even have a clock. :D

Brilliant m8. Sounds great.

Drop a dishwasher tab in there and go for a drive, works wonders for a good clean out. (y)

Wouldn't it be safer to remove from car and soak the plastic part in the solution?

Dishwashers are a mixture of plastic containers, tubing and pumps that work at high temperatures, not much different to a car cooling system apart from the lack of steel [some have stainless steel interiors though] copper and aluminium etc, of a radiator.

While you're at it you may as well add a descaler tab too :p

Do Fiat Panda's live longer with Calgon:confused:

I bought a foul water pump and used to use fernox to back flush engine blocks, radiators and the like untill one chap I know why I bothered oing all that when there were dishwasher tablets now. He was doing a car and showed me the results. Just as good if not better than the backflushing. I've been doing it that way ever since. Just drop the tab in, gg for a run, drain it, fill again with fresh water, then drain again and refill with proper coolant mix.

The backflushing with the pump looked like the start of a monty python episode anyway

This is a pic at the old house doing it the old way. I had to take the thermostat out, rig up the hoses and hope there was no loose joints to spray water all over the place.

Thanks guys...(y)

Looks like the thermostat is buggered...thing is it looks nothing like the ones for sale (127, panda 903 etc) it has two mounting bolts and outlets either side for the heater matrix and carb..as well as the big rad return??.. I'm a bit stumped.

My local motor factors could get the thermostat for £35. There was a company making them for £6.50, but not anymore..:(

It's the first time that I've really worked on a old fiat OHV pushrod engine and it's much more awkward than the Fire.

Oil and filter change done.

Air filter on order.

Gearbox oil changed. (looked clean and possibly the original stuff.)

Coolant system flushed and just waiting for the thermostat. I will try out the dishwasher tab suggestion when it arrives.

Having time with Charlie gave me a chance to have a good look at him.... He is not as good as Gavin's MK1......... But good enough. Pic's will follow soon:)

Forgot to say.... Charlie was nearly stolen the night before I picked him up. Two young gits got as far as sniffing around the car when the guy selling it noticed something happening...the car was parked down the side off his house, but being a big guy with tattoos on his neck and having four very big German Sheppards they legged it!

Would have been crime of the century in sleepy Norfolk :p

Yes dish wash tabs are great. But the reason that dish washers have a stainless steel liner has a lot to do with the caustic effect of the tabs.
They like aluminium quite a lot.
So use with care and flush flush flush
