How serious is a leaking shock absorber?

or if you're tanking it round the Isle Of Man, it'll nearly throw you off a cliff!

My MOT garage told me mine has a very slight leak on and passed it with a recommendation of getting them done in the next 5 to 6k miles...illegal passing it I know! It passes the bounce test, but I cleaned it all up and there is liquid appearing again around the rubber. So soon I will get them done. I have had one qoute of £150 & one of £175 from independent garages. This is for Punto front shocks.

I got two new Monroe Cinq rears on Ebay for £30 a while back...

They went on last night in half an hour of knuckle gashing!

Got Monroes myself. Very satisfied with them. Gas. "Sens-a-track". With lowering springs. Get new springs as well at the same time, as you have to take them off.

It's not illegal to pass it just because of a leaking shocker! :eek:O

No way man!

Ok, if the leak is really really bad, then, ok fair enough, but not if it's only a slight leak.

Sorry to be boring but I hope stating whats in the MOT testers manual helps clear things up.

The MOT testers manual states:
"examine each shock absorber for damage, corrosion, fluid leaks and security of attachment"

Principal reasons for failure:
"Fluid leakage to such an extent that it is clear that the fluid seal of the shock absorber has failed"

Notes:
"With fluid leaks it is neccessary to ensure that any fluid in the vicinity of the unit is from the shock absorber and not from any extraneuos source.

I can't see how a garage can be certain they will last for 5- 6k when winter is approaching. If oils coming out then grit and ..... are getting in.

Thats good to know they did know what they were doing when it passed!

Rang dealer today they said the two new shocks would be £105 labour charge and I've got to ring back with chasis no. to get the price of actual shocks. Surely dealer is goint to come close to the £150-£175 local garage quotes? How much should Fiat be asking for shocks?

Do the shocks come with new springs or do the springs stay on?

Thanks

You could try Desira for shocks.

Shocks come on their own so the garage will strip the spring and parts required off it and fit them to the new shock then fit that to your car, can take some time so £105 sounds kinda reasonable.

Liam

My dealer has quoted £82.25 for each shock, included VAT, plus £105 to fit grand total of......£270.50.

jonnyyeah is yours for the pair & fitted?
