The Grand Tour

The Grand Tour

Finished watching it, no change in opinion other than did rather annoy me when Hammond got the spec of the Mx5 wrong.

Spends 5 minutes explaining how the lack of an LSD on the mx5 makes the abarth 124 a better drift car, fine other than the car he tested on TG was a 1.5, which is half the price of an abarth. If he'd drove a 2.0 he'd know the mx5 comes with an LSD at less than the starting price of a cooking 124.

Ah well they were never known for factual accuracy or knowing anything.

I only ever watch Top Gear/Grand Tour for the challenges (I missed the Q&A segments, like "What if I was an eel and sodium salesman?") and such. There must be a better car show (probably on YouTube) that gets into proper details.

I will say my favourite part of the whole series was the 911 launch control segment.

If you like the challenge kind of stuff Roadkill is worth a go, it's on Netflix if you have it...it's ever so American but it's basically 2 guys from Hotrod magazine dicking about. Some weeks it's a long trip others it's cheap car challenges and others they do ridiculous things but actually build them rather than top gear/Grand tour here's one I made earlier.

Leaf blower hot rod...which actually gave 40 additional whp on a rolling road!

The Draguar...which overheated so bad they did most of the episode with a bonnet on the roof..

Is there anything else worth watching on Amazon video yet or is it still a 'wait until the full series is available and pay for one month' deal.

We get it as part of our prime membership, so amazon music, Amazon prime video and next day delivery on orders, and to be fair they screw up often enough that I end up getting most of the membership for free.

Caved and paid 5.99..looks very nice in 4k.

Watched the 1st episode today, you knew Hammond was doomed before he crashed..never mind the media coverage or the allusions to it at the start of the show. From the moment he said "watch this" it was always over..

The grand tour is what it is. Like it or not. Top Gear is dead, this is more fueled in some ways directed at the more over the top petrolhead. Really no surprises one way or another, it's been sexed up & advertised to death. Some like it & are entertained by it, some are not. Simples.

Watching the new one, and James May brings the 1st worthwhile bit of car telly in the series so far. Rather like the UP! Gti, even if the use of a sound symposer to "add" noise to the 3 cylinder does suggest they could have just saved weight on engine bay sound proofing rather than faking it back in after suppressing it.

There is a lot of love in the press for the UP gti and not just the motoring press.

It basically captures the essence of what made the original golf gti in 1976 so good and fun to drive.

I think added sounds are going to become the norm in the future as new powerful cars just don’t sound anything like big CC engines

It's a 3 cylinder you don't need to do anything fancy, they sound like half a flat six anyway. All you need to do is damp the vibrations out. It's a small sporty car, as long as it dies to a background hum at motorway speed (which it should given 6 speeds) then there's no need to mute it...especially when you then feel the need to engineer that quietness out again.

This episode made me feel old...I remember Clarkson testing the XJR he had on GT on old TG...and Also the one where he drove an X type down a ski slope.

It's almost as though he has no new ideas....

The Ford side repeater on the xj220...who looked at on such a car and thought yep..that'll do. Destroys the side profile..

I loved the highlighting the various faults of the XJ220.. still love the car, it was insane for its time and as they showed is still pretty mad today.

I also loved the EB110, I’ve always loved bugs and that car was just as mad as any Lamborghini. The new Bugatti’s still carry the quad turbo arrangement of the 110

These where the poster cars when I was at school, as well at the F40, I was a bit late for the countach which was more 70s
