General Which 500

Being that i am closing on 40 I do not drive like a loony anymore but would like the extra umph on the motorway when overtaking but that said even on the motorway I tend to stay on the inside lane, of late it seems to be poisonous!! no one drives in that lane anymore:confused:

Imagine how I feel. I spend up to 5 hours a day driving on the M1 five days a week. Even being a 'white van man' I utilise the nearside lane as often as possible. I cannot understand the bizarre mentality of the selfish goons who persist to hang in the middle lane, even when matrix boards are flashing 'DONT HOG THE MIDDLE LANE' Even more bizarrely, the people that do it are often doing just 50mph and get exceedingly upset when people cruise past them in the nearside lane at 70mph! I've seen it all, fist shaking, the finger and screaming when no one else can hear them. :bang:

Thanks for the reply, I really like the idea of the Twinair but had concerns over such a small engine on the motorway, I am aware it has more power than the 1.2 but it seems like such a tiny engine to rack the miles on.

Yes i am after a used car and am only looking at the 1.4 because of my daily milage that said if people think the 1.2 or even the 0.9 would be capable of the high miles I am happy to entertain.

I am yet to test drive one but I am the kind of guy that get sucked in by the lifestyle of a car, I used to only drive classic minis which on paper are not the most relaxing drives but i loved the small car feel and am hoping to recapture this in a 500 seeing that minis are no longer mini...:)

I bought a 2011 twinair lounge today. Slung it down the A10 and M25 and kept up with the big boys. It's an amazing engine. Plenty good enough for the motorway.

My one is a lounge spec but I think the sport with the revised bumpers looks much better. I'll be selling mine, if it was for me definately be a sport twinair

Totally agree with this, maybe 30-40-50 years ago when we had 30hp beetles and 20hp fiat 500s you might well have had problems keeping up with the traffic on a motorway, these days there is no reason that any little car should have any problems keeping up and these little cars have the same horse power today as much bigger family cars with much bigger engines had 20 years ago.

Really the question is what is the car going to be used for and what will suit the owner best

Also what I forgot to mention is I think the 500 has a very favourable seating position. It feels slightly elevated for a small car, so I don't feel so vulnerable on the road even though it's only a little car.

When I drive Corsas, Foci and Astras as well as Hyuandi i30s at work, they seem smaller and more cramped even though they are bigger cars.

Sounds like met police fleet in a nutshell!

No, and they are all filthy inside too.

Ah, that sucks. Bet you get some right scumbags around too, huh.

Hope you find what 500 is right for you mate. I'd love to be able to have an abarth but insurance for an 18 year old is incredibly expensive. 1.4 N/A was the closest I could have

The exhaust note on the abarth is rather incredible for a little 4 pot 1400 engine!

I'm enjoying buying them, doing them up and selling them, but I get to drive them for a while first and I'm learning so much about them. Every car has issues I have to get over to get it ready to sell and this Forum has been amazing. I'm now able to help others which makes you feel all warm and fluffy:)

I would like to get an Abarth eventually, there just doesn't seem to be any that crash! At least not available for me to buy. There's been one on eBay for months but I think it's too expensive. Love the TwinAir although this annoying reversing grown is a real pain.

I love the 1400 engine, very free revving and plenty of power. Another plus is that it sounds great. Mines just done 30000 miles and runs a treat. Dualogic not for everyone (loads on here about that) but ive got no choice as it is used by my wife who cant feel her left leg after a stroke. Ive learned to adapt to it and despite all the negative comments you will read, once you learn how to use it, its fine.
My ideal car would be the 1400 in my seicento, on a manual 6 speed gearbox, but i cant afford a divorce lawyer who would get me out of that one.

Does the Dualogic require a lot of maintenance? Is it a conventional automatic or a manual with electronic gear change - like smart fortwo - ? I am planning on getting an auto as i am used to them and also i travel a lot in traffic..

It is a semi automatic, therefore as you say like a smart car.

Fiat did make a full automatic 500 but only for the US market!

the smart gearbox is weird but is fine when you get used to it.

Do you know if the fiat auto gearbox requires any service?

It's a robotised manual system, not a conventional automatic.

It doesn't drive like a conventional auto 'box either, so I'd strongly recommend you give it a decent test drive before you buy.

I'd also suggest you read this thread in its entirety before committing to your purchase.

Personally I wouldn't take the risk of a dualogic 500 unless I were buying a new car with the intention of trading it in at the end of the warranty period.

Does it require service? Oil change and stuff or not?
