Has anyone else experienced corrosion on their Oil Sump in the first 4 years of ownership?

I recently took my fiat for its 2nd MOT and it needed it's Oil Sump replaced after only 4 years. To me this seems a bit soon.

Also can anyone tell me how much a replacement sump would cost and is it a big job?

Thanks in advance

Stacey

Sump replaced for an MOT?

A new sump will come in at about £45 inc gasket sealant. At a guess, I would predict about an hours labour and possibly the cost of fresh oil (about £30?)

That assumes easy access to the sump screws, without having to remove other components.

But I'm puzzled - are you sure the MOT said sump needing replacement? I am not sure corrosion would be a major problem in that area?

Others may be on later with more knowledge - but I hope the above gives some idea re your question.

Sorry I should have said it was MOT and service. I was just a bit taken aback with a 4 year old car having heavy corrosion. I have the old part and going to contact Fiat. I was just interested if anyone else has experienced similar.

Thanks for the replies

An OEM sump is the best part of £200 , but thankfully shop4parts do an aftermarket one for a shade over £36.

It's a straightforward enough job, but another example of a premature repair caused by Fiat's use of cheap, shoddy parts. (n)

By no means unusual on the 1.2 FIRE when used in salty climes, as evidenced by the ready availability of an aftermarket sump.

Unless it's about to fail catastrophically, I'd suggest having it done with your next oil & filter change, as they'll need to change the oil anyway when they replace the sump.

Edit: Just noticed you were having the car serviced as well, in which case it makes perfect sense to replace a suspect sump. Much less expensive than losing your oil in flight and possibly wrecking your engine or, even worse, causing an accident behind you.

if it still has some life in it have a look at this video

My panda is 10 years old with the same engine, I noticed quite a lot of surface rust on the sump a while ago. I covered it with kurust rust convertor £5 from halfords, painted it and it hasn't come back. 90mls goes a long long way so I now use it on all the other surface rust and I've still 1/2 of a bottle.

To my mind, Dave, your method was exactly what I was thinking of when watching RUI's video.

What a jaw droppingly long winded way to treat a humble sump pan!

No disrespect here to RUI, who is to be commended for posting the video!

WAXOYLE.

Total spray underneath once a year, including sump.
Works for me.
