Anyone know where I can get a new set? Or can they be re-shaped and reused?

I recently had my front discs & pads replaced by Kwik-Fit (I know, I know , but I didn't have time to do it myself and the MOT was looming!)... Brakes were done fine, although parts were exorbitant, and the car got through the MOT a couple of weeks later.

Recently though, I've noticed a continuous rhythmic knocking/tapping noise from the front-right wheel, which stops whenever I start to press the brake pedal. The knocking only occurs when driving, and then only above 35-40mph. Having looked around on the forum, when the same problem was encountered before, the recommendation was replacement anti-rattle clips -- Mr Kwik-Fit said the same when I took the car back to have it checked on warranty.

So, anyone actually know where new pins/clips might be available? shop4parts and ebay don't seem to have anything; I could probably get some from FIAT but is there somewhere else, or indeed can the old ones just be opened out a little to make them fit better?

I've also started noticing a squeak from the brake pedal around 0-20% travel..... I don't imagine it's related, but what could it be/what can I do to stop it?

Cheers folks :)

Ad clips: Every aftermarket dealer should be able to deliver them in the set of 4. I think mine are Quickbrake brand and were about 2 EUR.

Ad screeching while the pedal is partially engaged: Try application of some copper grease on the non-braking (metal) surface of the pads. It is also possible that the noise disappears after the pads are run in properly, after, say, 500 - 1000 km.

Thanks enda -- the squeaking from pressing the pedal isn't from the brakes themselves though, it's from the pedal itself. It also happens when the car is stationary, just from pressing the pedal down the first 20% or so of travel...?

And I'll look a bit harder for those clips then :)

tony,

try spraying some WD40 on that pedal pivot and springs..that should solve it !
So simple ....:)

I bought some orange goo by 'Dynagrip' called 'Disc Brake Squeal-Free'. It's supposed to be more permanent than copper grease, since it forms a rubbery coating on the backs of the pads. I used it to put together the back brakes on my Uno, and keep meaning to get around to doing the fronts. You can see it at http://www.noelsautoparts.com.au/Dynagrip Products.htm though I'm now beginning to realise that since it's Australian, we get it at Super Cheap Auto, and you probably can't get it at all :) But there will be something similar at Halfords I expect...

EDIT: Just realised it isn't even on that page! That's some aerosol product, where mine has the same name but comes in a bottle with a brush-shaped nozzle.

Well OK, a small update on this (for the benefit of anyone else that gets this problem) -- unfortunately I didn't get round to doing any work on the car.... but the noise has now gone!

So no more rhythmic tapping/knocking from the front-right brake, and the squeaking went too once brakes were bedded in. So all's well that ends well ;)

Whenever I get time I'll probably still get the wheels off and stick some copper grease in, but it's kind of a lower priority now....

Think you find you had a trapped stone that has now untrapped itself, but check the disc for scoring.

well that's a whole load of help then Alex! :p

Thanks, I'll have a look around Halfrauds today and do a bit of work on the car, once I get over this hangover :yuck:

:D
Yeah sorry!
But I have an update for you: I used the orange goo to redo the front pads on my Uno Turbo, and they've never been quieter! It's more effective than the copper grease (that I normally use). Hopefully there is a similar product available to you - it will be worth a try and you don't need to use much, so it will be useful for future brake jobs on other cars as well.

I've never had a hangover, unfortunately, so I can't sympathise there!

Interesting to hear that your noise went away, but brake noises tend to be like ants in the kitchen. They go away, but then one day, they will be back...
