Hi all,My Uno 60 1116cc cuts out after 20 mins running and will not start for 4 hours or so after.Fitted new fuel filter, cleaned out jets, new dizzy cap,new coil, leads are OK absolutely fowxed now.any ideas???

I had simliar trouble with my Uno it kept on cutting out but always started up straight away.

I took mine to get a new lamda sensor but that still didn't work, but I also found out that it was something to do with the throttle body a small pipe was leaking on it or something, I was going to get it fixed but I crashed the car, The damn thing was fine after the crash and started first time all the time[:(!][:(!][:(!]

Any other symtoms or times that it happened, i.e coming to a stop or putting your clutch in to lose revs

cheers gaz,the only other symptom is after 20 mins it cuts out instantly,no juddering as if running out of petrol, but it is like turning off a switch.I fitted a new coil and dizzy cap but still the same.Had the car from new since 1989 so I know the history of it but it is beginning to wind me up.

This quote from the "honest john" website (no relation) may be relevant:

"With the FIRE engine, if the engine cuts out when hot, will restart after about 10 mins, then last another couple of miles, the reason could be that the cable insulation cracks and shorts inside the distributor from the magnetic pickup to the ignition module. Results in no spark. Happens on cars from late E reg onwards. Pre mod distributors had red & green cables which never gave a problem."

It relates to Pandas with the "Fire" engine.
I know your isn't a "Fire", but it's something to think about.

Sometimes that problem happened on mine just cut out the lights on the dash come on, i.e oil and battery.

There are 2 fuel filters on an UNO, have you checked them both[?][?][?]

When it doesn't start again, what happens[?][?][?]. Do you just turn the key and nothing happens or what

Thanks for the help guys,I'll have a check of the cables this week. After it cuts out,it still turns over OK,but doesn't fire up.Just flattens the battery!!!

Hi Bob..

My father had a Uno 60S (1116cc) from 1987 to 1996... maybe in 1992 had your same problem...

My father still has the invoice of the mechanic:

In Italian:"...Sostituzione impulsore e centralina spinterogeno..."

I try to translate in English, but I don't know technical terms: "... substitution impulsore (???) and centralina ( box with transistor, resistences, etc...) spinterogeno ( from the dictionary: battery coil ignition )... "

Have you understood anything?... No?...

sorry for my English

Roberto

I'm not sure and I try to repeat...

The mechanic replaced two components of 'spinterogeno' not all the 'spinterogeno' ...

Many pieces form the 'spinterogeno'... among these, the mechanic replaced:
1. electronic ignition control unit (ok!) --> 'centralina'
2. the 'impulsore' that I don't know, but my father says: "...If you look this 'impulsore', it seems like a big resitence... " but he doesn't know if it was really a resistence or a other component...

mechanic didn't replace a coil or all the 'spinterogeno' --> named 'battery inition coil' by my dictionary Italian-English...

bye and escuse me

Roberto

i have had a problem just like this on my uno 60s (1116cc). It only happened in cold weather though, and was due to carb icing.

The engine would lose all power and come to a stop after running for a short time on the open road. I checked everything and was stumped, until one day i opened the top of the air filter just after it conked out and saw ice in the top of the carb. The car would restart after a few minutes after the ice had melted. I replace the pipe that feeds the carb with hot air from the exhaust manifold and it hasn;t happen again

good luck

I think the ice in the carb is probably the right diagnosis - mine does the same - still cuts out from time to time - I love it all part of the fiat experience quite frankly!!

Might be totally on the wrong track here, but it's never stopped me before!!

Had exactly the same thing happen in an old car ---

(Metro - sorry, was still a student at the time but it was modded anyway - bigger engine etc.. :D )

---- what it turned out to be was a dodgy petrol cap, of all things!
What happened was that as petrol was pulled out of the tank, it created a vacuum in there because the the vent in the cap was blocked, and the fuel pump literally couldn't pull any more petrol out. After 15 mins driving or so, it would cut out and wouldn't start for a while, unless you took the petrol cap off and heard the tank go 'Boing!' as it regained it's natural shape [:0]

Hope this might be of use to someone anyway!

Pete.
