It wasn't too bad actually Smokeme, as I tend to do cleaning in stages. First I cleaned the engine and engine bay using simple parafin and an old paint brush to shift the oil and grease. Washed it off with a hosepipe (making sure I'd protected the electrics first!), and then polished the inner wings. That made it a much nicer place to work in!
For the cam cover, I removed it and using some alloy cleaner (acid type) to shift a lot of the alloy corrosion. Then I used wet and dry paper (started with harsh grit and progressed to smooth) to rub it down. After that it was a few hours with Autosol to polish the alloy up to a nice shine. Took about an afternoon to get it that shiny. End result looks pretty good I think.
I know what you mean about the alloy wheels though. They take an AGE to polish up but it helps you build your biceps! I have a set of Fiat X1/9 alloys that I will refurbish to put on my Uno when I finally get round to it. Too many other things taking up my time at the moment though :-(
