It is so frustrating how hard it seems to be to get a decent oil level reading on my W reg Fiat Ulysee 2 litre petrol, at the moment it is reading below the min level when engine is warm and I have this problem constantly with just gettign an accurate reading when its warm, any tips or anyone have the same problem.

Do you mean the indicated level on the display above the steering column? If it shows full when cold and below minimum when hot, looks like sensor trouble. Have you checked using the dip stick?

Do not have a thing above steering column, but no was referring to dipstick under hood.

Dip it cold, first thing in the morning, before you start the engine.

Once it has run, oil has been pumped around, lowering the level in the sump until it drains back down. This can take a while depending on how warm it is.

If you can park it on a level surface and check it before it is started in the morning, you get a correct reading, without having to wipe the stick.
If you have to park on a slope, and have to drive to a flat surface, get it hot, rather than warm. Once stopped, leave it for 2 minutes before checking the level.
If on a slope at home, do you park on the flat at work? Check it a lunchtime?

Just about checking from cold manual says check when warm?

If the engine has been run and is still cold, or has only run for a few minutes, the oil will take a longer time to return to the sump, potentially causing you to overfill it. Hence the recommendation to check when warm. (Meaning hot)

If you check it before it has been run, all the oil that will ever be on the stick will be there. Filling to the max then will not cause it to be low at any time.

So don't be afraid of it. Drag the stick out before you start it, or at lunchtime after it has stood all morning.
