Camshaft front bearing worn???

Ok - secondhand head on, car running and has even moved 30 yards under it's own power However, there is a nasty droning noise from what appears to be the camshaft front bearing area (left hand) side Also the camshaft sprocket is getting rather hot. Could this be as simple as tapping the bearing out and replacing, or could the camshaft face itself be worn(?) I didn't consider specifically lubing these bearings when starting the car for the 1st time last week, however I suppose it could have been a pre-existing defect.

Re: Camshaft front bearing worn???

Tried a new bearing, still noisy. So I've whipped on my old camshaft and matching bearings but it's now got too dark to do the timing for umpteenth time. Lets hope this works OR this TIPO is going for scrap. Can anyone advise (or guess) at the correct torque for the camshaft retaining shells i.e. the 2 brackets that go over the camshaft in the middle? Anything remotely tight and it quickly gets too stiff.

Another camshaft on but the same problem. All I can think is that oil circulation on that side of the head is suspect.

When you took the cam off, did you make sure you knew which bearing fitted where and which way round? They must go back the same.

Andy thanks

Yes, they can only fit one way as they both have slightly different fixings. The car ran for a few minutes ok on both occasions but then it seems like the oil supply to the left of the cam then diminishes. The vital signs e.g. indicated oil pressure, heat supply etc are ok. There may be too much oil in the sump right now, could this be a factor? Had the car been driveable, I was going to whip it straight over to Kwik FIt for an oil change.

First, i dont like Kwikfit at all. They are crap. But if its only oil, then just watch them do it.
Second, Have you checked the camshaft pulley is same as one that has come off and not different? It could be different and so running out of line which will make it noisey.
Other problem could be inner bearing. Without seeing it, its hard to diagnose. Try some WD40 on the pulley whist running. See if this quietens it.

Andy.

Jonti.
On this engine, is the cam carrier seperate to the head? If so, just swap your old one.

Andy.

I think it is the petrol head that has a detachable cam carrier - but the diesel head is one cast. I have tried 3 different cartridge bearings (they plug into the cam casing) 2 shafts and the problem persists. The bearing picks up lube oil through a small hole in the top. I'm sure the oil is not getting into that side of the cam at the required pressure. Perhaps the oil pump has got lazy or there's a circulation problem but I don't fancy tackling these jobs myself.

Sounds then that there is an oil starvation issue perhaps? Maybe the head needs the oil ways blowing out?
Have you a pic of the head?
Did you compare the pulleys?

Andy.

Andy

Thanks for your help.

Assuming the council haven't towed the car away I'll post a picture when I get back at the weekend ! I have 3 cam pulleys in total and they're all the same. The woodruff type keys vary so you can't mistake the fuel pump pulley for the cam pulley etc.

Re: Camshaft front bearing worn???

The end of the camshaft runs in the Bearing (right) which fits into the Cylinder head apeture (left). Common to both is the visible little hole from the oil gallery. These holes line up and keep everything lubed. For the record if this thread is used in future I was advised by Best Engines (York) - highly recommended for engine stuff - to spin the engine on the starter with the cam and belt removed. After a while I was able to see oil spurting out of the hole so hopefully this has sorted it.

Re: Camshaft front bearing worn???

You'll whip the head off and have the cams out but fancy changing the oil pump? Don't like getting messy?

Hope it's sorted.

Re: Camshaft front bearing worn???

Well I took the cam cover off and the oil pump spat out oil 2 metres in front of the car. That'll do for me. Whip the head off? The cat's starving, girlfriend hasn't seen me for 8 weeks. And still the TIPO doesn't work !

Re: Camshaft front bearing worn???

When you refit the head, you should fill the cam housing up with oil to help the cam and tappets.
