Hi There all,

I've just been given a Tipo 1.4 DGT, which although was a really nice gift from a friend has a couple of problems.

On the drive home from picking the thing up the engine continued to overheat figuring it was just a radiator leak i just filled her up and put a bit of radseal in and carried on. happened again had another look saw that the water pump is driven by a belt to the left of the engine? never seen that one before.fitted a new belt all was fine ecept the engine overrunning or cutting out all together if the choke isn't fairly well out. (mpg's a nightmare).

The belt only lasted a few days so went to a garage had another fitted by the mechanic. Now thats gone as well. If anyone has any idea what this could be i'd really appreciate a little help, i'm really skint so am a bit reluctant to go along to the garage if i can avoid it.

Thanks for any help
cheers

John

Welcome to the forum John. Hope that we can help you out and keep you around!

Did the mechanic reccomend any work when he changed the belt? If the water pump is chewing through belts maybe it is seized or something? Maybe you need a new water pump.. Very cheap on the 1.4 you're looking around 40 pounds for the parts. Try shop4parts.co.uk and sapmotorparts.com if your local motor factors can't source them at a decent price.

I had a problem with my Tipo AFTER I took it for a service when I first got it.

There was a Tensioner that fell off because it wasn't tightend, I lost the Water Pump, Alternator and Power Steering because the Belt came loose disabling a few other belt driven gears that were connected.

Far as I can remember, the Water Pump Pully is the same as the Alternator or the Power Steering, one of the two so if that belt is faulty you might find problems with something else (I don't think the 1.4 DGT has power Steering)

What you want to do is have the Fuel Mixture looked at, at a Garage (They can't charge you more then £40 is a minor job) have them poke a pipe in the exhaust and check the emmisions.

If its a Carb there is something on it called an Injector Jet (I think it was called). What it does is when the key is turned to the off position it is meant to cut fuel flowing to the Carb to prevent Over Running, what also happened on mine is that this injector malfunctioned and what is was doing was trying to turn off the car while it was on by cutting the fuel and not cutting the Fuel when the car was swtiched off.

The injector can either be replaced or removed all together.

The Over Running will stop once the fuel mixture is set correct and the Idle is not above 950 - 1000 RPM even without the Injector Jet.

In any case, Change the Timing Belt and the Bearings and use RedEx on each petrol fill up for a couple months.

Hope this helps :)
