You’re a legend :D will

this is how I traced it all back to be working at the moment. excuse the diagram lol

bottom braided pipe that goes to the port with the adjustment screw on it runs to the white control valve then back to the top port of the carbon trap.

The middle port of the carbon trap runs directly the base of the carb. Or arrowed in the diagram.

and that’s all that’s connected.

do you think thats how it should be hooked up in relation to the pdf previously posted?

Basically yes, PDF looks right. Ok, what i would do, is replace the carb with a none emission type. This way, you know its not going to run poorly. Or first try blocking the pipes at carb as previous described.
The fact there is no connection from the fuel tank to the Charcoal cannister, means the thing aint working correctly, that is its not under pressure. Junk this Cr*p asap. Someone has had a right go at this car and done some stupid things. Time to get it put right. Engine will perform much better without that junk.
Btw, is it a low compression engine? These engines love high compression and good induction. As the infamous saying goes;- The three "C's", compression, carbs and cam. And boy done right, this engine flies.

i bow down to this forums knowledge base :worship: emmision crap is out and engine goes like uh... this! RAWR

temperature is still a bit disturbing. might get a temp guage to see if it is at the temperature it says it is.. also a question on the thermostat. where is the bugger of a thing on a 1300cc engine in case i need to remove it.

bit more smoke than before too.. probably because there is no emmison gear in there i pressume? :p possibly running too rich? or maybe i just need to let it run a bit more..

moving on from that now i need to properly plug up the pipes as i just left them hanging and wedged some bolts in there for now. are there specialist plugs you can get?

oh and rather fittingly, i get my learners liscense this saturday :chin: only 3 years late!

You have pictures of the thermostat housing already posted up. If you follow the waterpipes around the engine you will find they only come in and out of the engine at two points. The first is the water pump at the timing belt end of the engine. The second is the thermostat housing at the opposite end of the engine, the housing is relatively easy to access and remove but you still need to be a little careful in the process. The thermostat is just a traditional design consistent with the age of the car's design.

Do not be tempted to run without a thermostat - you need to replace it with a restrictor if you do want to try. I don't think this is your problem though, I'm still more inclined to believe it is an electrical fault.

Just looking at the video and I have to say I don't think you have any real problems with that engine. The liquid coming from the exhaust is water from the combustion process that normally escapes as gas when the engine is hot.

From what I can see the system is not heating up properly or the water circuit has a blockage somewhere. The expansion tank does get hot and you certainly would not be able to pull that trick of touching it with your bare hand. I've managed to earn myself a fairly serious scald doing a similar trick (pulling the bottle cap off).

excellent. at least thats narrowed down the possiblities some. ah k so the thermostat is in that 'water manifold' then..

also pulled the carb air blower out too as that never worked and was quite damaged. made quite alot of room in the engine bay now. i guess it cant be too bad for circulation :)

After the video, it sounds like you have a blowing manifold or exhaust. For every gallon of fuel used, a pint of water is produced. This is why the exhaust rots out especially with little use.
I think you have a radiator problem. Flush it fully out. Check the bottom pipe is hot at both ends, and fit a new thermostat. Run with the coolant cap off to disperse air. Also looks a bit sooty does the exhaust and proberly in need of a tune. Retarded timing can also make it run hot too. Otherwise, its looking good!!
