What is your opinions on de-cat pipes, do they really work, if so, what sort of BHP gains can be expected?

Any ideas who makes the best one and where I could buy one?

Scotty

Re: Re: Would a de-cat pipe work on a HGT..............

I wouldn't expect a performance increase, and remember its a MOT failure...

Sorry i couldnt be any more helpful

my bravo is a 1.6 which as standard puts out 103 bhp

I have a filter and supersprint 4 branch exhaust manifold with decat and a stainless power flow back box

I had it on the rollers this weekend and it produced 126bhp and it was miss firing. That was with out nitrous as my nitrous kit isnt working properly at the mo. I will be going back to well lane in a few weeks time :)

So in answer to your question a decat pipe on its own will make a difference but you have to do all the above for a big power increase

Re: Re: Would a de-cat pipe work on a HGT..............

Whats the power at the wheels? You still on a stock ECU or did you find somewhere that could tweak it?

Re: Re: Re: Would a de-cat pipe work on a HGT..............

I was invited to well lane shoot out at the weekend, which will be on tv in a few weeks time. TBH i'm not sure if it s a fly reading or at the wheels. I'll find out. I was more interested in sorting my engine timing out TBH.

That was on the standard ECU Tom. My ECU will be getting re-mapped in the near future but I'm just in the process of having a few more choice engine mods and upgrades shipped over form my cousins in the states. Will be lookin for remap in the next few months though. I'll probably let well lane via the superchips network do the ECU

Re: Re: Re: Re: Would a de-cat pipe work on a HGT..............

I'd guess they were flywheel figures. Must be looking at 100ish at the wheels.

Thats impressive for the stock ECU, maybe the Weber unit is better than the Bosch. Dare I ask what you are getting from the states? Supercharger? ;)

I have found a direct replacement for the 1.6 ECU from Marelli, it comes blank so getting the car started is fun but its fully programmable via a serial cable. Just unplug your old one and plug in the new one. Not sure if it works with the immobiliser though.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Would a de-cat pipe work on a HGT..............

Ribz what do u mean by a four branch exhaust manifold? Do you mean the four in one manifold?

The Bravo...different day, different sh!t :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Would a de-cat pipe work on a HGT..............

Hmmm
1.6 and had 11 more HP than my 1.8
I should consider throwing my car down a mountain then...piece of crap! :(

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Would a de-cat pipe work on a HGT..............

I thought your was 140something?

FAO: Schumi

I mean 4 branch exhaust manifold. It is a 4 into 1 though

FAO: Tom

That ecu sounds interesting Tom.

Watch this space for the my new bit of engine kit! should be a good un though! cant wait to start fitting it all!

Re: FAO: Tom

At £700 ish it would have to be good. Apparently its the Marelli race one based on the F1 & Ferrari systems and far better than the Weber Alpha.

Come on, spill the beans, what have you got now?

Re: Re: FAO: Tom

lol! No no I'm keeping quiet

700! that sounds alot of cash! so what are the advantages of this ECU over having superchips do a remap on my existing ECU?

Give me your mail address and I'll mail pictures to you as things go on the car, I reckon I will take about 2 weekends for me and one of my mates to get every thing fitted and working, I'm still waiting for parts to come in though!

Plus I'm just in the middle of putting a 2L 16v vaux lump in my Nova, I've got quite a lot on at the mo Tom! lol

Re: Re: Re: FAO: Tom

It has more RPM, fuel, ignition points in the maps for more tweakability. The Weber Alpha only has 16 points between idle and redline and I don't think stock ECUs are much better. When you are trying to get the ultimate power from an engine, having adjustments every 100RPM as opposed to 500RPM makes a HUGE difference.

The big advantage is that you just plug a PC into it and tweak while its running on the rollers. With a superchip you need to swap the chip each time.

My ultimate plan is to supercharge the poor thing. I know for certain that will really **** up the stock ECU as the map sensor won't know what to do with positive manifold pressures. Its about job number 8,000,000... the garage needs cleaning and the mini needs finishing first. :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO: Tom

Sounds good to me, I'll have to have a look into that,

do you have a website for the ECU?

Well lane told me that Superchips can remap the existing ECU Tom.

They put the car on the rollers then plug the ecu in to the superchips PC. A Superchips engineer then does the remapping. Thats how the guys at Well lane turbo centre explained it to me anyway!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO: Tom

I'd like to know the outcome of that. Everyone I've talked to (ok, not a huge number of people) said it could not be done. They must have found a way around. Any ideas how much they want to charge you?

There is no website for the ECU, I found some details on http://www.gmcmotorsport.co.uk/ but they don't like chatting about engine mods, they want you to spend money.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO: Tom

lol! that sounds about right! Most companys are all the same. will defo do a bit of research on that chip

Its £230 if I remember correctly for the remap, ring well lane turbo and find out. 01924441364

Quick question for you Tom, Have you any idea what the highest BHP our 1.6s can run safely? or where I could find out if not it will be a case of suck it and see I guess!

The standard clutch seems ok for about 200bhp from what I've seen of mine. It can handle 75bhp nitrous jets fine, any thing bigger and the clutch slips

I haven't satrted looking for a half race clutch yet but i'll defo need one have you looked into any thing like that yet?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO: Tom

Yes mine has 142 now with cams and ECU
but with all that his 1,6 had (manifold, backbox, decat,kn...) my car had only 114.2!!! How can his have so much more!!! :(

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO: Tom

I'm confused

"Yes mine has 142 now with cams and ECU
but with all that his 1,6 had (manifold, backbox, decat,kn...) my car had only 114.2!!! How can his have so much more!!! "

What exactly have you done to your car? and did u have 114bhp or 142bhp? What engine size?
