Can anyone help please my wipers in my new car are getting more of a work out than I had hoped for, and I seem to have a problem.... The wipers are 'sticking' juddering across the windscreen - regardless of the amount of rain or whether they're on continuous or intermittant (initially I thought it was just that it was only drizzling and not enough rain, but it's been bucketing down and still no change). What do you think - just new wipers? back to dealer? never had this happen on new car before....

I phoned my dealer when the same happened to me and he told me to spray the washer fluid a few times and put wipers on full. I also wiped the wiper blades. It still sometimes happens if I don't use the wipers for a while but if I do the above all is then okay.

See this too https://www.fiatforum.com/500/165522-sticking-shuddering-window-wipers.html

hope that helps.

Heidi.

Mine were like that for a little while too but a week anda bit later they're fne. Nothing to worry about :)

All cars do it sometimes, and some a lot. I think people don't use the washers enough. Make sure your washer fluid is strong, and always use the washers when just wiping a few times. And make sure you clean the wipers properly when you wash the car. I shove my car through a car wash and often go for the wax wash, which leaves a very weak waxy solution on the glass. I seldom have any problem with scraping wipers.

Lots of washer fluid then. Oh, I assume you do use washer fluid and not plain water?

Only had car a week, so exactly as it was when it left dealer. Seems like it's got enough washer liquid in it. Think it's probably just a new car thing.... Thanks all! :)
I've had mine for two weeks and as I said above it does disappear

yeh- mine did this too- what seemed to bed them in was during some torrential rain, using them on fast wipe- no judder at all. since then they have smoothed out- can still bounce a bit but no where near as bad!

my lst car had this...im not very tolerant to it so would drive round without them on!

thank goodness they get better!

Mine too for about a week! They seem to have 'bedded in' ok now and plenty of use over the last week!

If they start juddering again, Autoglym Glass Polish seems to do a good job of removing all contaminants and leaving them streak and judder free (y)

The best way to avoid it though is to only wash the windscreen with a really good PH Neutral shampoo, and not one with wax in it. TurtleWax will cause them to judder from my experiences (and it's crap anyway)

mine did that for the first 3-400 miles, and i was getting worried for the wiper motor, it was so bad. tried fastidious cleaning of blades and screen, and even "eased" the bend of the arm a bit, but still juddered. By coincidence I then topped-up with a readymixed screenwash (No particular brand - whatever was on the foreourt at the petrol station) and they are now quiet and smooth (at 970 miles - I don't get out enough!). Weird!

Mine still judder a bit after 1500ish miles, but are far better than they once were. I treated the screen with rainX, which helped a bit too.
My brother's a ford technician, and tells me that the situation is worse on the ford Ka (which is essentially the same car as the 500, whatever some claim!). It seems that ford have used really cheap and nasty wiper blade, that bend and crash into each other, causing all sorts of grief. A little bit of juddering seems mild in comparison!

It's at this time where it should be said that Fiat were responsible for the development of the Ka

actually- the development of the 500 and the new ka was a 'joint venture' to pare down costs for both manufacturers

fiat already had the floorplan sorted as was panda sourced, another way to save money- but its not accurate to say that fiat were responsible for all the KAs development.

ford tuned the chassis of their car, and would have had a hand in many aspects of the car- wiper blades included!!!

as someone who was suprised in the torrential rain on the day i picked the 500 up, the wiper blades are obv an issue on both models!

how both ford and fiat could let this slip past their testing i dont know!

Actually that's where you're wrong.

Ford of course dictated the styling of the Ka and the fact that it was to have the Abarth rear suspension etc etc but Fiat and Fiat alone were responsible for the engineering work on the Ford Ka and that is a fact.

It's not an issue with the design anyway, it's simply the two surfaces not wanting to work together and when they bed in it goes away or if you clean the blades or the screen.

.

i saw a Ka on test at Dunton 2 years ago and there was a guy on NF 500 from Ford that said they were doing development work at Dunton

draw you own conclusions...

OK perhaps not entirely then. But there are photos of the Ka being tested alongside the 149 Milano and other Fiat projects so it does seem like Fiat is doing the lions share of the development which makes sense as they know the platform.
