Windows XP SP2 ** OT **

Has anyone installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 yet, I have gotten hold of it from Microsoft but before installing it i wan't to know what it gonna do to my system, what changes can you see from it ( if any ) and is it worth doing or not, cheers guys.

Seeing as SP2 hasn't been released yet, I'd be interested to know where you got your copy from. The release date was put back to August and their website still says "Coming Soon".
This KB record http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=322389 was updated on Thursday and still says "SP2 - Coming Soon"

As far as any difference it makes, well, it's usually a wise idea to install it. Unless you run a specific piece of software that might possibly be affected by it, then there's not too much to worry about.

I installed a beta version of sp2 months ago. Mine has been ok.

All the talk says it'll be released Monday 9th August, as the SP2 has been RTM'd

the beta version has been available for a while. they released sp2 to a select group of people. i can't remember if they were subscribers to a service or if it was people that went to a show, but i remember reading somewhere that 'if you do this you will get a copy of winXP sp2 before anyone else'

Given Microsoft's reputation, it's a brave person that installed an SP2 beta !! LOL

I know the way they work tho'. I had the XP OS before it was released as I was on the alpha & beta testing program due to my employment with Gateway Computers. I remember long nights listing everything that didn't work, and believe me, it was a long list. It looked very pretty but was ridden with bugs. Still, when it was passed and then released they had sorted most of the stuff and I got the Pro edition and Plus! XP for next to nothing as a thank you
I do remember a day at Microsoft HQ in Reading, tucked away in a room, with a couple of geeks showing us development footage, mostly screenshots, of XP. I swear those guys had a box of Kleenex under the table, they were that excited ! And as you walked into the main building, there was a huge illuminated sign with a clock counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds before XP was due for release. A great place to work tho'. There was a creche, video arcade, all sorts of things to make the workers happy Slag him off all you like, but Bill knows how to treat his staff.

got it from a friend of a friend of Microsoft and it's the 128mb so it's a good size , just wondering what's new and what's worth installing.

err, MarkPro the size should be at least 266mb ! You may have a release candidate version

It was me who installed beta sp2. Can't remember why it was installed
think I delegated the job to someone and they downloaded the beta acidentally (you cant uninstall it). Just wondering if it will let me install the real sp2 over my beta version it might say its already installed. I get that with some patches it says its already installed them. You would think microsoft would have thought of that. Mind you it is Microsoft!

I would wait a few weeks after sp2 is released in case any problems with it. Also everyone will be downloading it so will be slow.
