The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%.
The front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be
transmitted through them.

Also you can get as dark as you want in the rear windows as technically you dont need rear windows (think of cans etc). Mines are 80% rear and 50% front - technically my fronts are illegal but hopefully it should be ok.

If you are wanting any more information have a look at the following PDF File from the VOSA website. Vosa Website

In theory, most cars now come with the maximum legal tint on the front windws so you shouldn't put anything on them, but...

So long as you drive sensibly, don;t give the police any reason to stop you, and any tint you put on your front windows isn't too dark you should be fine.

That is until VOSA do stop checks and actually check your tint level! ;)

But alot of window tinting places won't do your front windows anyway...and the ones that do sometimes make you sign something to say that you accept they are over the legal limit and it is your own responsibility.

But in the interests of decency, make sure the tint is the same all the way round...I can't stand cars that have really dark in the back and light in the front.

dont think thats the situation in glasgow

There has to be a minimum of 70% of light getting through the front windows and a minimum of 30% of light getting through the rear windows.

Most Police forces can't/won't check the tint levels......... but as Martyn found if VOSA are out and about then try not to get seen if your car tints don't meet the requirements

You'll probably find that most tinted cars don't meet the requirements!

I was informed that you didnt require rear windows and therefor you can tint them to a limo tint if you really wanted to. The example my mate gave to the VOSA guy was that vans dont have back windows, the guy still told him to removed his 80% tinted from windows though

my rear tints are limmo. some1 before me had them on the front, who knows what they were thinking

You can get round the rear tints by converting the car to a van, as vans do not require you be able to see out the rear window, but a standard car does have limits to the tints unfortunately!

Put the rear seats down, sorted!

I wouldnt worry too much about the back windows, I havent saw a VOSA agent check a rear window ever. Pain in the arse now that the Glasgow police have been issued with the light gun things they are everywhere. Still they are only doing their jobs. Long as your not a cheeky bastard with them then your generally ok.

And with regards to the darker rears than front, mines is a difference but It doesnt really bother me - just depends how much privacy your wanting in the back seats I guess

Mark

ive got stopped before for my tints, they had a light meter, tested it and the front windows are letting 42% of light in, (which i thinks wrong) but he just said that he would advise me 2 take them off, and he let me go.
