Hiya folks.

Just fitted 16" coupe turbo wheels to my bravo 1.2sx.
Unfortunately as there the standard tyres for the alloys (205/50/16) there catching/rubbing on full lock and a little over bumps.
I know the motors came out of the factory with 175s on and that the 2ltrs had 195s but had wider arches.
Should I stick with 175s or has anybody gotten away with anything abit wider??

Thanks all.
Lee

I think the problem is that the tyres are too big in diameter rather than too wide, if you look at the tyre size calculator here http://www.etyres.co.uk/tyre-size-calculator you can see that for a 16" rim you need a 205/40 or 205/45 tyre to bring the diameter back down to the same as a standard 175/65 x 14. Unless anyone else on here knows different.......

Thanks for that oversteer.

My tyre fitter suggested at the time that 195/45/16 would be better, but I thought with the HGTs having 195s, but wider arches, that they may still rub.

Hopefully some one on here may have the same wheels and know for sure.

All the best.

My tyre fitter suggested at the time that 195/45/16 would be better ...

I started out on this Q. with 175/65R14 as the reference size – they rotate at 879 revs/ml. Then setting aside width - 205/50R16 rotating at 838 revs/mile (-5%) are somewhat oversized, & you’ll be taking-up the designed-in slack of your speedo. Check the variation between speedo & SatNav.

The tyre fitter suggests 195/45R16 as your best option for your 6Jx16 rims – probably with the knowledge that 6Jx16 rims aren’t `approved’ for the Bravo 205/45R16 tyre option.

Thanks for the reply Caravadossi, but not sure I get the jist of your reply.

Its more the rubbing thats concerning me than the speedo being out. I'm going to buy some new tyres but dont know whether the 195s would rub to.

Thanks again.

Should true speedindicated speed then you’ve no worries.

205/50R16
The point is you’re experiencing rubbing when pitching (up&down) & yawing (side2side) – conclusion, whether you want to talk width or height, they’re (as you’re found) too tall & too wide. They’re rejects.

205/40(or 45)R16
These sizes have been suggested – but your 6Jx16 rims aren’t type `approved’ for those sizes.

195/45R16
I haven’t got access to a Bravo OH - but I’d expect to find the tyre options listed would be 175/65R14, 185/60R14 & 195/50R15. Then assuming it’s a given the rims are 6Jx16 & type `approved’ for the tyre selected – then you’re looking at 195/45R16. If 195/50R15 fit, then 195/45R16 should – the width is the same, & the variation in dia. is 5mm!

I take the view that your tyre fitter is being straight with you.

Obviously (or not) we haven’t touched on any fidgeting with ET or possible hassle from your insurer.
