whirring sound on start-up

Hi,
In the past couple of days, whenever I start the car I get a whirring sound. It kind of sounds like something rubbing off plastic, and disappears as soon as the engine starts.

When I turn the key it turns over as normal and just as the engine kicks in the weird sound happens. Its a "chugg chugg chugg whiiiirrrr" kind of sound, then everything sounds normal again.

Any ideas what it is? I had a quick look the other day but hadn't a clue what I was looking for (and it was cold out) so I said I'd try get advice before poking around at anything.

Could be the solenoid sticking on top of starter motor

starter motor for sure. get it changed before it goes completley. by the way, its the starters clutch mech' not the solonoid !!!!!!
