Yesterday, got into the car started it up and it refused to go into gear. There is pressure on the clutch so i don't think its that. A very nice man helped me out and managed to get it into gear and from then on its been fine. Was fine this morning too, just got into it and again its refusing to go into any gear and just grinds trying to go in reverse.

Help please!!!!!! I have to pick my daughter up later from school i need to be mobile!

my money on slave cylinder leak on the clutck. check the brake fluid reservoir level to see if its dropped. luckily this is another common fault that is also cheap and easy to fix.

doesnt say the make so i wouldnt bother (its probably remanufactured). you can get a good quality clutch kit for the same money at your local motorfactor. an LUK 3 piece kit should cost £50 for your model.

intermittent problems like this usually arent the clutch itself (how could the plate only disengage sometimes and not others?), it is far more likely to be a leaking slave cylinder. it is not uncommon for a new slave cylinder to last only a couple of months. i had one leak after only 6 weeks when i first bought my current car. crap parts are a false economy. at least check it before buying a clutch kit.

Before you start thinking clutch, you need to make sure that the slave piston is moving properly when you press the clutch pedal. I'd be amazed if your clutch suddenly fixed itself for a short while. With the engine not running, can you shift gear and does the gearstick feel solid and precise? What exactly did the helpful man do to fix it the first time?

Hi guys, well it 'fixed' itself, then went again so i managed to get it to my mums and there he stays. With the engine off the gears are no problem they go in as normal, however when its having its dicky fit it just will not go into any gear (reverse grinds and crunches) i now have another problem. When i start the car there is a grinding whirring noise from the engine, this stops after a couple of seconds.

I am also having problems starting the car, sometimes it will start with this whirring grinsing noise others it just won't turn over at all and i just get the whirring noise!! This has only started since the gear problem

Barney has gone into self destruct mode

Hi Jug, i know what you mean but this time the clutch doesn't feel anything at all like it did when the clutch slave cylinder went. There is still pressure on the clutch (feels exactly like it did before) when the slave went before the clutch just went to the floor (if that makes any sense)

Luckily i've got Dennis on the road now, but this is driving me mad:bang:

i think its time to get it into a garage. if the same grinding/whirring noise happens both when the car starts and when it doesnt, it suggests the starter motor is the cause, but its hard to say without hearing it myself.

Ouch. Sounds like something nasty has happened to the clutch then. Could be bits of metal floating about in there. If the starter is now having trouble it could have had a dose of iron filings or the starter ring teeth and/or starter pinion could have been damaged.

Like the man says, it's garage time :(

Good luck.

Oh bugger :(

Is it likely to be costly? i'm already getting quotes of £200 + just for the clutch

it depends what the actual problem is. £200 for a clutch change isnt that bad if that includes the cost of the clutch. if the starter motor needs replacing a scrapyard motor will be £20-30 and fitting is easy so shouldnt cost much.

AA seem to think its the thrust bearing has collapsed. Have had a quote for £148 supplied and fitted for the clutch so i'm feeling a bit more optimistic.(y)
