General What is this ???

I am still new to the Spyder and have a question( by the way I have a 1981 Spyder).

I was under the driver's dash and came across this black recepticle that is right next the steering wheel and has a silver bezel on it. What is it and what might it be attached to. Pic is attached, sorry about the clarity.

You pix did not post. Could you repost or be a bit more descriptive of the object. It may be the O2 sensor replacement warning counter if it is to the left of the column however.
