Cowboys did carry whips although commonly refered to as "Quirts" (or 'la cuarta' in Spanish if it was a Spanish cowboy you were refering to - I personally preferred the idea of being a Spanish cowboy in opposed to a yank), an example of a quirt and a link to where you may purchase a genuine quirt or whip is shown below.
