Hi All,
I'm stoping fulling my self now.
Yes, i do have a sympthons of well known 3rd gear crunch. 90% of the time I can put 3rd gear nicely, but 10% is giving me a CRUNCH sound.
On most of panda ads fair sellers do mention that and they do refer to that sound as normal or typical. No it is not normal to me. Yes, I could live whit that but as a typical panda enthusiast I would like to ammend that.
So my question is - which exact internal parts are worn and what other once would be right thing to renew while having box stript down? I do already have input shaft clutch side bearing to go.
Thanks

The actual crunching is caused by the syncromesh wearing on 3rd gear. This can often be fixed by replacing the baulk rings but sometimes the whole syncro hub needs renewing. While you're at it it's a good idea to replace all the bearings to.

All of this is in an ideal world where all parts are available at affordable prices. Sadly it's not an ideal world and you may find getting it reconditioned by a professional is cheaper and easier.

I thought it was only mainly the 4x4's that got 3rd gear crunch?

It certainly seems more "normal" on the 4x4. None of mine crunch apart from the Sisley - tbh it's done 120k and it rarely crunches if I guide it into 3rd - it adds character and makes me drive it a bit more considerately than I do the others!!

mines done 124,000 and does not crunch, must be your driving palio:p

I'd take that on the chin except it was doing it when I bought the car at 100k :nerner: I hesitate to say that the first owner was a lady of the female persuasion, but draw your own conclusions.......... :D

I like to think I drive cars hard but with some mechanical sympathy - gearboxes I'm careful with, engines can deal with anything we throw at them (y)

sorry just noticed a miss print in my post forgpt to mention this is the third gearbox in my car:D

i could show pictures of the gearbox that was in my sisley.. lol i dont think 3rd gear crunched but 5th was non-existent! the box was only umm.. 43k miles old lol

Of topic, John one more post and will have 1k posts.
keep going mate.

It,s quite possible that your old box was running dry due to leaking shaft bearings etc.

Just had a small drive down to seafront and didn't notice any noise when puting 3rd look like it is more prone to crunch when gearbox oil is warm.
