Hi, I have a rumbling noise coming from my o/s/f wheel/tyre. The noise increases the faster I go and gets quite noisey. If I go round a roundabout the noise goes quiet and then when I straighten up it comes back. Could this be a wheel bearing???

Do you get any vibration under load/going up an incline/when accelerating, or any clicking noise when turning at low speed at full lock?

Hi, nothing like that at all. I had a major vibration under load with my other coop and it was a shot driveshaft. But on this car it's different, it just whines after about 10 mph. The faster i go the louder the whinning gets??? At first I thought something was rubbing on the tyre but after inspecting the underside it wasn't the case. I have renewed the brakes, discs, calipers, wishbone and droplink over the last 3 weeks in prep for the MOT. So this one has got me stumped?? Thanks for any info given.

It could be a wheel bearing. Jack up the whole front end (If possible.) put the key in the ignition (To release the steering lock.) grab the wheels and give them a good shake (Hands at 12/6 O'clock positions, and 3/9.) and check for any play.

Thanks for the reply, i'll try it tomorrow and see if I get any play. I'll let you know how I get on.

Looking forward to it. :)

Try shaking "vigorously" and gently too. The wheels will more as you turn the steering, if you get any "rocking" that's play. If you get rocking with your hands at 3 & 9 it could be steering or bearing, if there's rocking at 12/6 it's most likely the bearing. I've replaced bearing/hub flanges before where the bearing was fine, but the hub had either worn inside the inner bearing races or had shattered.

Hi, tried the test today and there is no movement 12/6 and only very little 3/9. I picked up a new bearing to day and will fit it tomorrow. Do you know what size the retaining nut is? I have tried a size 32mm but it's too small. I don't want to buy the wrong size. Cheers

I think it's 36mm. Whereabouts are you? if you're near me, you can borrow my 36mm socket.

Do you have access to a hydraulic press? You will need one to remove the old bearing and press the new one in. If you don't have a press you couple probably take the hub to a local garage and get them to do the pressing for cash.

Might also be worth getting a second opinion and have someone look around. I'm not 100% sure it's the bearing, and wouldn't want you to spend unneccessary money on a bad diagnosis over the net.

Hi, I appreciate what you’re saying. However, I am going to change the bearing first and see what happens. If it is not cured, I will change the driveshaft and then steering rack if the problem remains. Not much else I could change then. Thanks for the info ref: the nut size and hydraulic press info. I think I’ll take it to a garage and ask then to do it for me and I’ll let you know how I get on. Cheers

Re: Weird noise from o/s/f wheel/tyre

Hi, well that was a job and a half !!! It took about 3 hours from start to finish. It is a size 36mm socket (slim wall). The hardest thing was the pressing out of the old bearing...It took over 150lb of pressure, heat and an air saw to get the old bearing out. Cost: £10.00 new socket and £36.00 for the new bearing, but...Job done, no more noise. Thanks for your help and hope that others can benefit from these posts.

Glad you got it sorted. :)
