Does the mk2 8v need a water pump gasket or is just sealant ok? wherever I go, even halfords have said there water pumps dont come with gaskets as it is not needed for this model?

Can anyone confirm if this is correct cos my mobile mechanic is adamant it needs a gasket otherwise its a bodge job.

Cheers

Yeah I just replied on your other thread. I had a water pump last year from Shop 4 parts who are Fiat specialists. There was no gasket. You seal it with silicone gasket sealant.

Cheers, It just seems strange as the mechanic is adamant about it. Ill tell him to just use sealant then. Hopefully it will do the job.

Unfortunately I suppose it's impossible unless you get a Fiat specialist mechanic for them to know every part.
He should know this, but you can't just use bathroom sealant ! He must use something like Granville silicone sealant which is a replacement for a physical gasket.
Make sure when the old pump is replaced that the surface is cleaned of ould gasket and anything else that will prevent a good seal. And he just needs to run a neat ring around the back of the pump (there will probably be instructions with the pump) and not to use too much and get it where it shouldn't be!
So does that mean that the garage massively mis-timed your engine?

Well the old one we pulled off had one, Im just gonna go for it then and tell him to use the sealant, worst case scenario it leaks my coolant ****s my belt and Ill just buy a new kit I suppose.

It means the garage charged me 216 quid sending the ecu changing the coil packs ( which I already told them I replaced) , changed sparks before they decided to check the timing belt which you can do by just taking the plastic cover off as the mobile mechanic showed me.

Iv named and shamed the garage I mean thats just a joke to me but ahh well live and learn. Cheers for the info dude (y)

Who set the timing in the first place?
And yes, I did my own water pump, using silicone gasket sealant and it has not leaked.
You can easily enough have a quick look under the car once it is done and running and you will see if it is leaking, but if he does it right it won't.
