It is on the selector cap, but must admit that i've seen boxes without that thing, from the top looks like pop- rivet.

I think that C501.5.10 type of box{ panda, panda 4x4 ,uno,y10 etc} does not have typical "one way valve"breather, but some other fiat boxes have one. My regata C510.5.17 has one, simlar to the 4x4 rear axle one, so John's idea of drillng/taping a hole for the breather with one way valve is very good.{ and making the box as watertight as possible.}

ahh thanks guys.. so what i may do then is take that top cap off (with it being steel) weld a nut to it, then drill though the nut to make a hole.. then stick a hosetail connector and hose, then feed it into the car.

i did the same thing with the rear diff.. the original one way valve unscrews out so in the same hole i just fitted a hosetail connector and length of hose.

I think if water has been getting in to gearboxes it's more likely that it'll be accessing the oily bits through the driveshaft gaiters or at least those points where is scope for leakage out, which would in turn cause leakage in. I don't see how a breather pipe would help on a gearbox that does not have a breather nipple in it already?

On Series Landrovers we used to replace the screw-in axle and gearbox breather valves with a hose fitting and run a length of small (1/4") pipe from there up to a clear area. This helps a lot, but if you waded a lot, more frequent transmission oil changes were still required. I did see one installation where the breathers went to a canister of silica gel to absorb water, but that seems like a bit too much trouble. Mind you the cost of the oil for a comple transmission change on a Landrover is pretty eyewatering.

thats actually an interesting idea!
drill another hole in the gearbox.. say in the middle of the filler plug in the recess of the allen key and used a reverse threaded hose tail connector so i can still undo it to fit an Allen key in to undo the fill plug...

then i could get one of those really small low voltage air pumps and make it so that i can get airflow through the gearbox.. then i could just loop it around and pass it all though a chamber of silica crystals made out of an old bottle or something... Hmmmmm...

as far as the one way valve goes i could easy use a spring type one way valve connected on a T bit.
i have all these bits lying around too from when i helped out removing the bar pumps from a pub :D

could do the same thing for the rear diff..
