I see. So what exactly would I need to do to the Mk2 engine to make it work in my Mk1 do you think? Would it be worth the hassle since I've found a Mk2 1.6 or shall I wait till I find a Mk1 unit?

Sorry to give bad news, but according to the Haynes manual the later engines ECU has two connectors instead of one (like in the older). It doesn't make the job impossible, but v. difficult.
