This morning I heard an ominous knocking/tapping noise while driving very slowly (in traffic again), about 10mph. I think it was coming from the rear. I have recently replaced both front springs (good guide on here btw) and cleaned up the inside of the rear drums.

Broken rear springs maybe?

Bearing in mind it passed the MOT yesterday too! It's a 56 (Feb 07) plate 1.4 8v active.

Thanks

I'm now hearing this noise at up to 20mph, and it seems to be dependent of vehicle speed Any ideas?

Haven't had the chance to get underneath it so can't be sure. Gonna take it to a independent specialist tomorrow so they can take a listen to it on a trip round the block

Does it make the noise when you let off the throttle? As when driving slow in traffic and i accelerate up to about 10-20 mph then let go, there's a loud knock that comes from the back of the car, possibly drivers side

It can occur both on and off throttle, but obviously it's easier to hear off throttle. Also seems to be loudest towards the end of my commute.

I have had a knocking sound from the rear of my 500 1.4 POP for a while now. I had the rear shock absorbers (18000 Miles!) replaced a month ago and hoped that would fix it. Alas it didn't and if anything it is worse. I took it back to the guys who replaced the shockers and they had the car for the day and tried everything, including stripping the rear end of all parts, still couldn't find the cause. It is mainly at low speeds, going over rumble strips on the approach to a roundabout really makes it knock..... I am at a loss as to what to do next.
I know that there is nothing loose and that all of the springs and dampers are in good order. Has anyone got an idea what to do???

Hi,

Sorry, forgot to reply to this thread! I took the wheels off and had a look, only possible thing seemed to be the inner wheel arch trim 'popping' as a bracket on the suspension arm moved up and down, and so past it.

So pushed the trim back so it was 'behind' the bracket - and the noise has gone!

Simple (and silly) as that!

I have had the wheels off and poked around with the trim, but nothing seemed to be loose or in the way of any moving parts. I put it all back together and hoped (foolishly) that all would be well. Took it for a drive and at speeds upto 20 mph it sounds like the whole back end is loose and banging about.

Going to take it to another garage to see if they have any ideas..... AGH!!!
