Hi all, I've noticed that on some occasions my uno turbo feels very unresponsive (like it has a loss of power) and when it drives in this way i get lots of back popping from the exhaust and my engine gets a tad bit hotter than normal. It only does this once in a while, usually its fine but when it does happen i can notice the difference in acceleration straight away :D lol
Normally when the car is running fine i dont get much back popping from the exhaust at all, BUT on the rare occasion when my car DOES feel unresponsive i noticed i can hear it back popping a lot and i also noticed the temp goes up higher than normal when it does this. Any ideas what is causing this??

Nothing obvious springs to mind Ash, but i thought i say hi, you've not been about much lately. New lady friend??

Tom

Ello Tom, no lady friend just a new job that keeps me busy 6 days a week now, not enough time to work on the UT these days, got so much things planned though still as soon as i get some time off! :D By the way nice pic of your motor in your avatar mate.

Id take a guess its running lean. filters/pickup/pump maybe.
Cheers Steve, I think you could be right my K&N has seen better days, i have a new piper cross induction kit which i will use from now and see if this makes any difference, the pump was changed recently too. If that doesnt work i'll try my spare air flow metre and see if that works.

The worse your air filter performs the richer it will run numb nuts! ;)

Whats you new job?

I started this about a month and a half ago, and since then i've started using the quiet times to get on here, now i feel more comfortable i'm not going to get fired if found out.

Tom

lol aaaah right see thats what i thought as well a rich mixure would be caused by an iduction kit performing badly,
in that case Einstien what makes a mixture too lean then? too much hot air???
As for the new job well i'm doing a lot of graphic design work for Brent Council and wembly stadium.
ps you better be careful mate, you dont wana get caught looking at those dodgy porn sites you so fancy during working hours lol
And one last thing today i noticed a slight coolant leak which is probably why my temps have risen slightly, do you think radweld is worth using or not? I have some but am reluctant to use it cos i think Krausey said it fooked someones engine up once on TC???

I wouldnt touch that crap mate, just seek out the leak then fix the fault...
My old rs turbo used to run like a sack of **** when hot, so i wired up an over ride switch and put it on the dash so i cud keep the fan on whilst burning round town centers and in traffic..
Say your fan cuts in at 90 oC now thats bloody hot and as water boils it expands so it will try and pust out though a easy gap, so if you wire your existing fan up on a over ride switch then you can just flick the fan on and keep it that little bit cooler round town.... once on the open road you can turn it off as cold air cools the water as you drive along...

I would say its because your engine is running to hot causeing it to run lumpy, either that or t is kinda showing signs of a head gasket eg...
As the engine gets hotter water expands, then if the gasket is weeping then the water will go into the bores causeing it to run lumpy.. plus u also said it was using water again signs of a head gasket.
But try the fan option first it worked for me... (y)

Spot on mate, i agree about that radweld **** which is why i havent used it in my baby, i've roughly found the leak today, got a split pipe somewhere from around the header tank area, must be the pipe on the bottom of the header tank or pipes going to the turbo. will take a better look over the weekend and sort it, other then that she hasnt been over heating to be honest just that i noticed the temp needle go up one notch higher than halfway which is what got my attention to the problem.
As for the lumpy running i dont know about that one i'm still baffled. it Doesnt do it all the time, in fact it hardly ever does it, runs beautifully most of the time :D but when it does happen i can notice it immediately.
As for the manual fan i think i will add that at some point.

I have a manual fan, i felt i needed it as i hate seeing the needle even half way, and after i fitted my FMIC it always ran hotter. I remember you have a new IC since i saw your car last, have you noticed higher temps since, could this be a factor thats slipped your mind?

I 3rd the radweld view.

R5 owners are advised to buy a different coolant sensor, one that cuts in at a lower temp than the OE item. If you're feeling energetic you could see if you could find one that opened the thermostat a little quicker, i wouldnt be surprised if there was much of a variation in them between vehicles.

Re the hardcore porn; I use my colleagues pc for that, so if anyone gets busted its him not me! lol

Sounds like the jobs pretty interesting, though i'm concerned you might be to blame for the delays finishing it...?? ;)

Lol That monstrousity of a stadium should be opening on time hopefully, i think Muse are the first live band playing there! The lights on it look pretty cool at the crack of dawn though i gotta say!

As for the uno well I have already fitted a lower coolant temp sensor when i fitted my front mount mate ;) Seems to work pretty well actually,
As for rise in temp its due to a coolant leak which i have finally found at last, i guess it was leaking a little at first which is why i couldnt really notice it but it has become noticeable now so I will fix it over the week end. Its on the header tank side somewhere so i'm guessing its one of the hoses over there, possibly one from the turbo.
Gona get some new red silicon hoses and fit them everywhere at some stage but for now just gona sort the leak out then all should be well again. Hopefully the weather will pick up by then. Got sssssssso much work done on my interior and loads of little goodies for the car. Should post some pics soon but waiting till its all completed ;).
Hows your beast coming along? Got any pics?

 F R O $ T Y

Sounds good, i look forward to seeing them, though i'm not much of an interior man myself! ;)

Externally its not really changed from the last WW, i wont have it sprayed until the engine is ready, no point giving tin worm any head start!!
