What a sad week... :( My 1992 Fiat Ducato Camper/Motorhome got stuck in reverse gear one evening and now the gearbox has gone to heaven according to the mechanic!

I am looking to get it re-built by either A & M in Chelsmford (thanks to advice on a forum) or looking for a replacement. Whichever comes cheapest.

Can anyone help?

Needing a 1.9 diesel 5speed gearbox where the clutch lever must be at the bottom???:worship::worship::worship:

The good news is I have one in bits in my garage, the bad news is , it needs syncro rings and I have been looking for the past two months and have rung most suppliers throughout Europe but still no luck. still more bad news , if I find the parts for my gearbox I cannot sell it as these gearboxes are rarer than hens teeth

Syncros were used in some boxes of the later ducato, scudo, ulysses for a couple of years. They're listed on the tecnotransmissioni website have you tried them? http://www.tecnotrasmissioni.com/ricambi-tabsconti-EN.asp

Thanks I have not tried them yet, but I will now, if they cannot identify part over computer/phone,I will have to call in with parts on my next summers Italian/Spanish trip, thanks robin

You can find the part numbers yourself on eper.fiatforum.com and crossreference them on the page I linked.

In 2010 I had my gearbox (1992 Hymer B564 with FIAT 1.9 TDi) rebuilt by a company in Romford. I am not allowed to include a URL, so Google using these words: 'north street garage romford motorplex gearboxes'. That will take you to their web URL.

The synchro rings on first and second gear had worn out. The box is still performing well. At that time I paid £450 for the re-build. I see that it is now £550.00 That seems to be a standard price, whatever the problem. I suggest you give them a call.

The 1.9 TDi is a superb engine - lighter and more powerful than many of the 2.5 diesels that can be found in many motor homes. It is a more modern design than those old 2.5s.

Thanks for all your replies.

I am however dithering and undecided as to whether to pay between £600-£950 to get the gearbox rebuilt or to buy another one. The vehicle is only worth £2000 up and running.
Do I spend this much?? Or I could sell for spares/repairs? And what price am I likely to get?

What do you guys think?

I have posted pictures up of her in the gallery - Ducato Retro Betty
