Hi everyone,

So excited to be here, to get to my questions right away.

Well i have just bought a UNO 2-Dour 1.1. I have discovered it has a knocking sound when turning very sharp and driving on gravel road. My guess is steering system maybe loose, i checked only c.v. joints boots but their fine. My steering seems kind of loose but i can understand it from a car that has 120 000km on the clock!

Secondly when i drive also on gravel or uneven road i hear this sound of springs making a dong!! sound from the back, My guess maybe their old but suspension seems fine when driving.

Thirdly, i lost my Spare key and was wondering how to fix this with a tight budget.

Thank you guys out there in advance :slayer:

b.t.w I can take some pictures if needed of engine

Hi thx for reply,

Yes it is like tap tap sound on full turn and like i said above, on gravel when lots of vibration?
could it be my steering rack?

how can i fix the key issue with steering lock not geting in the way?

Please any advice resolving in my car getting fix would be appreciated.

Hi guys,

i found the problem. wheels steering rack is fkced. left wheel has alot! of play on it , right wheel seems not so much.

Went and bought a new rack, now i wana know if it requires a pro's job or can i do it my self with the standard tools available.

Have made wheel alighnment apointment in 2 weeks time.

I think the bushes near the whell are ok. its more the inside joints with both rubber boots at the far end that is damaged. but it realy feels like something is going to brake off soon. will take it off tonight and take some pics too. thanx guys for the input hope the info im giving is of use.

hi,

i checked out the balljoints at the wheels they seem fine. the steering rack boot at the ends facing the wheels are damaged. im sure replaceing the whole rack wil be worthwhile. i wil take it of somewhere in the week and post some pics for other amatures like myself!:bang:

This sounds familiar, I think I did this job in 1998 on a ten-year-old Uno. There is a round plastic bush that the long end of the rack slides in (for those of us with right-hand-drive, that's the left end of the rack that's the long end. It's a bit fiddly to extract the old plastic bush (kind of a triangle shape, with three tabs expanded into slots - basically needs to be broken to remove. Mine was already broken.

Probably nearly impossible to get out with the rack in the car, easy enough with the rack removed (but need to unscrew the round inner tierod balljoint, which can be difficult too. Needs a big pair of grips or the special tool that I bought last month, which looks like a giant stud extractor.

The bush was available and was the same for lots of models. New boots are also available and their condition, if poor, may have led directly to the demise of the inner tierod balljoint or the rack bush.

Anyway, now you have a new rack to put in, things are pretty easy. Consider getting a balljoint separator shaped like a big clothespeg, they really make it easy and will come in useful for future jobs. The 'Draper' one (Halfords) is good if you're in the UK. In Australia and NZ, SuperCheap sell an imitation (black cast iron) which seems to break fairly easily, but is worth a try.

You'll need 17mm socket and ratchet/lever, and 13mm socket, as well as 13mm ring spanner and, from memory, a socket extension to reach the rack bolts from underneath through holes in the subframe. Fairly easy job all in all once you have the tools :)

That's three brackets opened and none closed, whoops - typing this on an iPhone. So here we are: )))

Rawill since you're reading, I happened to notice today that Mal got an email from you (I didn't get to read the email, just saw the Outlook notification pop up briefly - he was flatout busy getting a dozen different packages out, and I was helping with someone's Alfa, hope you got the reply you needed but if not, that'll be why. Try again another day perhaps, some days are much better than others :)
