Hi Team!

Recently brought an UT MKII with some happy little rust issues as one would expect.
the top of the roof is rusting along where the windscreen is fitted.
Is anyone able to give me a basic rundown on how to go about getting it out without breaking it (and in again!)

Thanks heaps!

Matt

You have a choice, break the windscreen and save the seal or cut the seal and save the windscreen. I have neven been able to remove both without breaking at least 1 item.

Uno screens seem to be very fragile

The Mk2 has thinner glass than the Mk1 and the rubber is slightly fatter. I found that out the hard way by attempting to fit a Mk2 screen to a Mk1 - it went in very easily and I had a visible gap at the sides.

The first thing to do is to go around the seal a couple of times, peeling the rubber off the inside edge of the body flange with your fingers. Spray some silicone spray in there too. It's demoralising at first, as you make little progress.

But then you can put one of those big Kiwi feet on the inside of the glass and with your hands, release the rubber again, working from the corner across and down. This demands flexibility (especially when you're as tall as Matt) and probably tones the muscles of the back. You might like to jam a screwdriver or two in there to hold the rubber back, but don't (of course) use the screwdrivers to pry the screen out.

Then you move to the other side and again work from the top corner - don't worry about the bottom of the screen as it just lifts out at the end.

The only windscreens I've broken during removal were ones that already had cracks. I did see a windscreen break AFTER removal, while it was sitting on a sofa - I think windscreens should be stored standing up.

For refitting the screen, silicone spray and heavy electrical wire is useful.

I've used the technique Alex described many times to successfully remove and replace mk1 Uno screens. The only times I broke one was when the new screen to go in was resting on the bonnet of another car and slid off :)bang:) and also when I tried to remove a screen from another Uno in sub zero temperature. Extreme cold seems to make the screens more brittle, and the rubber seal less pliable, so try and remove/ replace the screens in warmer conditions.

I`m still after a Mk2 screen if anyones got one...

Both my Uno & Tempra have the scratched screen via the wiper issue, the Uno one also has a chip so i want to replace it anyway, but the Tempra isnt chipped.

My question is has anyone found a good screen polish to deal with this?

I have considered mopping the screen with Farecla G3, then G7, then G10 & whatever other grades they`ve got now, but I`m concerned the heat generated by the mop might cause the plastic layer in the laminate to melt or delaminate...

Anyone tried it before?

I've tried and I don't think cutting compound actually cuts the glass. I think it just breaks down and clogs up the 'mop' (I haven't heard that term here, we'd call it the buffing pad!)

It does a lovely job of removing the water spots, though! Just try to keep away from the windscreen rubber...

To get a scratch out of glass, I'm pretty certain you need the 'Jeweller's Rouge' which I've read about but never found. Beats me why someone doesn't sell a 'scratch removal kit' and make a fortune.

Sorry, I`m old school, I still call any machine polishing `mopping`!

I mean a foam pad on a polisher.

I wonder what the abrasive is in jewellers rouge.. actually, I`ll google it...

They probably do do scratch remover kits, but you just know its going to be something else thats been repackaged & the price inflated by 50!

I have a mk2 turbo windscreen if your still after one (y)

And how could I ever forget that cold winter morning ready to depart to work and finding the windscreen neatly placed on the grass next to the Uno with the seal cut in pieces - stereo & "6 x 9" gone !!!! Took a drive to Glassfitt with the windscreen tucked between the 2 front seats - eyes watering from the cold air and staring through this big hole where the windscreen used to be - the replacement seal cost me a fortune to had it fitted again....oh, and to have the cd player and speakers replaced !

That's amazing. It would have been so much easier to gain entry through a door rather than by removing the windscreen. And removing the windscreen INTACT  I can't imagine thieves anywhere else in the world doing that.

'eyes watering from the cold', LOL... you don't have 'cold' there :p I bet it was over 10 degrees that day ;) In June, the Jozis were complaining "the weather sucks, hey" - it rained ONE day in a week and it was a 'chilly' 17 degrees, I reminded them what 5 degree midday temperature and weeks of rain is like. :D
