Hi,

Does anyone know what the actual difference is between the 1299cc and 1301cc turbo engine is? Is it different bore or stroke? I'm looking for new pistons and hoping they're all the same size.

On another note, on a 100k miles engine, assuming its not totally knackered, would you def use new pistons for a rebuild or just new rings?

Cheers!
Nick

The difference is not to do with the bore to my knowledge but then it's 2cc, a tiny amount of difference, so i guess it's something most publishers of the spec would/could overlook.

Thinking about i think i might of read there being a difference in the 1299/1301 rods....maybe?

Re the rebuild. I would not replace the pistons unless i had the money to spare or needed to do so following a boring out.

If you dont need to rebore then new rings would be fine unless maybe you're hunting large amounts of BHP, when only new (or uprated) pistons would be advisable.

I have my doubts if there is even 2 different engines. However the difference is apparenty the stroke. If the rods are the same the pistons would need to be different too. which I dont think they are.

rods wont change the capacity.

All engines this old are on a case by case basis. check the bores and make a decision. pistons are rings are not easy to get. not avaiable from FIAT.

Cheers for the response guys, I'm restoring my B-plate Turbo and not looking for extensive mods, just want it strong and reliable. Car has done a 100k but not been thrashed so hopefully it wont be too bad. Fingers crossed when i take the head off!

Sorry i didn't mean i thought the rods were the casue of the 2cc, just heard there might be two different rods but then i could be thinking of the cast/forged discussion a while back mk1 vs mk2...?

You can certainly make a tough mk1 from standard parts.

Yeah next job is to get the engine out and remove the head see what everything looks like.

Been talking to an engine machine shop, HT Howards in slough, the bloke there is so helpful, been searching for pistons for me and calling back to keep me updated, excellent customer service so think i'll be taking stuff there if I need anything done. He said a bore hone will be about £24 in total, and new rings will be about £40-90 depending on type. Pistons are a def no go, although mahle website lists them they stopped making them 4 years ago and no plans to remanufacture. none of his suppliers have any either.
