hi guys, i'm new on this forum. i have a '84 fiat uno 1.4D from my brother and i want to make it a track car. i want a bigger engine with turbo. do you know if the 2.0l 20v turbo engine from the fiat coupe is fit on my uno?

what engines with turbo do you recommend? i want to make my uno with arrounr 250-300 hp if it's possible. :p this car will be only for track.

thanks and greetings from romania.

hi and welcome,
the 2.0 fits, but if your building a track car why would you want to fit it?

i would guess that the 2.0 and gearbox weigh around 70 - 100kg more than the 1.3?

thats like having a pretty big mate sitting on your bonnet the whole time while your trying to put in a fast lap.

a well tuned 200bhp 1.3 uno T would trance your 2.0 uno turbo on most tracks.

personally i would spend my money on taking your 1.3 to 160 - 180 bhp (keeping your bottom end as standard) then if you really want more power/big numbers, spend loads on forged internals / making your bottom end solid.
After you have done this you can run more boost and take it to 220ish bhp (more money)

if you still want bigger numbers, and can put up with a (smaller) mate on your bonnet, look to the 1.6 lancia twin cam engine. this can make your 250 bhp.(y)

so you are saying that i can swap on my car the 1.3 turbo engine from other fiat uno right? right now my car has on it 1.4 diesel engine. 1.3 turbo engine with a bigger turbo and all internals forget maybe i can get 200-220 hp and on a weight of 700 kg it will be a surprise on the track. i will search for a 1.3 turbo engine. what do you think about 1.4 turbo engine?

yes that is correct,

you can go for the 1301cc Turbo (Mk1 uno) or the 1372cc Turbo (Mk2 uno) (both will fit)

lots of people say the 1301 is a better engine, that is revs better - i have never personally tested this, but i know for a fact you can get your target figure of 200 - 220 out of both.

be prepared to SPEND!
good quality forged internals are not cheap!

consider using the managment from punto GT

if you are certain you want 200bhp look at the 1.6 lancia twin cam engine - this will be a cheaper route than tuning a 1.3.

do you have any friends with uno turbos? i suggest you try one with the 1.3 engine and 120 - 180 bhp and have a go - these are plenty fast enough to have a good time on the track.

you can just about get 180bhp off the standard bottom end, my question is what is the point in spending £1000's looking for 20bhp or 40bhp more?

what is your budget?

do you know if the 2.0l 20v turbo engine from the fiat coupe is fit on my uno?

The 20v 5 cylinder turbo engine is a big old lump and your Uno will require major modifications to fit it. It is far from a bolt in swap.

A big turbo engined Uno might work on a drag strip (though torque steer would probably send you sideways) but would be useless on a twisty race track as the weight would kill the handling. If you want to go fast around a track then you need to lose weight, and sticking a huge engine up front will not achieve that! With a car as light as the Uno you need to forget about big bhp numbers because they are irrelevant unless you only want to boast power figures down the pub. Not only that, but being a light FWD car with no traction control, figures over 200bhp are only likely to generate much tyre spinning as you'll simply not get the power down on the road effectively.

Stick with a 1.3 turbo engine for ease of power upgrading, or if you're more adventurous think about the Lancia twin cam conversion. Best of all, go down to a race track and see what modifications the faster cars (of all makes) are running in the the Uno sized class. I can bet there won't be many 5 cylinder turbos present ;)

The way you should look at it is that if you plan it out to spend £11000 on tuning an engine and making the car safe for a track, why not just buy the likes of a FTO or older m3

An FTO will not be allowed to run in the same class as a Uno, and to make an FTO competetive in its class you'll have to spend a lot more than you would for a Uno.
